Grey Matter, born Andrew Gutterson, is an underground New York beatboxing savant. He’s a skilled teacher, as evidenced by his beatboxing tutorial series, which has been viewed over 5,000,000 times, and has the charisma to connect with huge names in the music industry. He’s worked with Justin Bieber on MTV and Cee Lo Green for a 7 Up commercial, and had work featured on Showtime and BET. He’s performed for NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jaleel White (best known for playing the infamous Steve Urkel), and frequents Long Island’s 5 Pointz, the Mecca of graffiti where music legends such as Doug E. Fresh, Kurtis Blow, Rahzel, and Joan Jett stop by. We spoke with Grey Matter, who described himself as “a regular, chill guy who makes noise with his mouth,” for this week’s Five Questions.

How To Choose Your Instrument

Brandon Simes
Tuesday, December 18th 2012

Choosing an instrument is a decision that can affect the rest of your life. It’s much akin to deciding which foreign language to study in school. There’s no wrong answer, but you’ll need to compile a careful pro vs. con list if you want to make an educated decision. Some people don’t need the help, they just know what to play, but if that’s not you, here are some suggestions for how to go about making the big decision. Oh, and here’s a sort of silly quiz that can make the decision for you.

Adults Benefit From Music Lessons Too

Thursday, December 6th 2012

Life seems to revolve around kids. Families invest in their education and try to provide them with opportunities to improve themselves and their future lives. Private dance lessons, costly AAU basketball fees, and countless hours commuting and waiting for the little ones to finish whatever activity they’re focused on that day are expected from parents. Then, kids become adults themselves, passions for sports and music stop being seen as important, and everything changes. Well, it shouldn’t.

What’s The Best Gift For Children This Holiday Season?

Brandon Simes
Tuesday, December 4th 2012

Music: as in a gift certificate for music lessons. That’s the answer to the question posed in the title. Music calms, motivates, and engages. Students who play music score better on standardized tests, do better in math, and have a better chance at earning more money as adults. Troubled students taking music lessons of some sort also have been shown to improve attendance and increase their cooperation with teachers and other students. That’s not to say those things will guarantee a happy life, but they usually help get you there.
