Adam Corwin Cooper
About
Adam was born in Atlanta, Ga, and raised by a musical family. His father was a professional Jazz pianist in the Atlanta club scene, and his mother attended college on a classical flute scholarship. As a child, he fell in love with music listening to the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bach, and Motown.
Adam's father taught him basic piano and music theory while in Elementary school. In Middle School Adam played trumpet and flute before falling in love with the guitar. Adam applied his musical training to self-teaching himself guitar using his father's chord books. In High School, he formally studied classical guitar and deepened his understanding of music theory, arrangement, and composition.
By 10th grade Adam was booking regular paid gigs as a singer-guitarist, providing live entertainment in various restaurants and for weddings. He was also recruited by the Collins Hill High School Choir and Gwinnett Community Theater to provide guitar accompaniment for various programs and performances.
Adam played banjo, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, and sang in the Four Thieves while studying at University of Georgia. They were featured in Georgia Connector Magazine, the Red and Black, and performed all over north Georgia and on college radio stations WUOG 90.5 and WREK 91.1.
After college Adam served in Teach For America and taught elementary school in Oklahoma, where he was renowned for playing guitar and singing to his students. He lead the music program with a Tulsa-based non-profit, Inside-Out, bringing arts education to low-income and at-risk youth.
After teaching, Adam returned to his home-state of Georgia to pursue music full time. He performed all over north-Georgia before moving to Seville, Spain, to study flamenco guitar. While in Spain, he was regularly booked as a live musician and sharpened his acoustic guitar techniques and started developing his own arrangement and compositional style. During this time he started remotely teaching ESL to online students in China, learning the ins and outs of remote workflows. He then returned to the states, living and performing in New York City and Philadelphia.
In 2020, Adam answered the call to ministry and relocated to Gooding, Idaho, where he serves as the Youth and Worship Pastor with Gooding Springs Calvary Chapel and oversees all aspects of the worship, multimedia, youth, and children's ministry teams. He teaches private music lessons and most of his private students have been invited to perform with him or to co-lead worship services.
Adam is a highly-sought after guest preacher and worship leader. He is frequently requested to play lead guitar with various para-church events in southern Idaho.
When he is not playing music or teaching, Adam loves to lead Bible studies, hang out with his wife and three kids, and go hunting in Idaho's vast public lands.
Teaching Style
Adam's teaching style is relaxed but purposeful. He believes music is communication and therefore relational. He takes time to get to know his students personally, and uses their backgrounds and interests to help them engage in whatever they are learning musically. Like his teaching method, Adam's teaching style is flexible and catered to the students goals. If they are new to playing music, the lessons might take a more exploratory feel. This allows the students to know more about the potential directions they could go, and allows them to better articulate their personal goals. For more focused or advanced students, the lessons are more clearly defined and focus on objective goals.
Curriculum
Adam's teaching method varies depending on the student goals, but everyone will start with learning to read tablature and chord charts. This enables the student to practice their homework material, and begin learning songs on their own if they choose. Students wanting to play classical guitar will also learn to read musical notation.
My primary goal is to get students up and performing and jamming with other musicians as quickly as possible. This helps get the students, "hooked on music" and more willing to learn deeper concepts down the road.
Most students will have all their materials provided.
Classical guitar students will need a copy of Christopher Parkening's Method book.
