Teaching Style

My teaching style is relaxed, adaptable, and student-focused. I meet students where they are, helping them build skills in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. I don’t believe in rigid, one-size-fits-all instruction—every student learns differently, and I tailor my approach to fit their needs, goals, and musical interests.

I emphasize learning by ear, improvisation, and practical application, while also incorporating technique, theory, and historical context where it benefits the student. Rather than drilling scales endlessly, I integrate technique into real music, so students develop skills organically.

I encourage a low-pressure, supportive environment where mistakes are part of the process and growth comes from exploration. I also believe in teaching students how to teach themselves, giving them the tools and confidence to keep learning and improving on their own.

And since music should be enjoyable and stress-free, I encourage students to bring their dogs to lessons and to practice with their pets. Having a pet around can create a relaxed atmosphere, making learning even more fun and rewarding. My goal is to help students develop not just technical ability, but a deep, personal connection to their instrument and the music they love.

Curriculum

My teaching method is all about individualized instruction, hands-on learning, and a deep respect for traditional and roots music. I primarily work with adults, and I understand both the challenges and rewards that come with learning an instrument later in life. I focus on practical application, combining structured technique with creative expression, so my students don’t just play notes—they connect with the music.

I believe in learning by doing, so my lessons emphasize aural training, improvisation, and repertoire building rather than just rote memorization. Every student has different goals, whether it’s mastering a fiddle tune, joining a band, or simply playing for personal enjoyment. I tailor my approach to each individual, making learning accessible, enjoyable, and engaging.

With my background in musicology and expressive arts therapy, I’ve developed a way of breaking down complex concepts so they make sense to different learning styles. More than anything, I want my students to feel confident and inspired in their playing.
