About

Hello! My name is Alanis Cartagena. I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor's in Music with flute as my main instrument, and a minor in Psychological Studies in Spring 2025. I have been playing the flute since I was 7 years old, and have played in different stages around Puerto Rico, New Orleans, New York, Chicago, and Texas. I've been part of the Puerto Rico Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Cayey Concert Band, and the Loyola Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, all as the principal chair. Currently, I am part of the North Texas Symphony Orchestra and the Flutissimo Flute Choir in Fort Worth.

I have participated in multiple master classes with world-famous flute players, like Richard Sherman, Ana Maria Hernandez, Peter Verhoyen, and jazz flute player Nestor Torres, among others. I have taught private theory lessons, guitar, and flute lessons for the past 5 years. I was the guitar and flute instructor in the Willow Middle School summer camp in New Orleans this past summer, and currently, I am a high school Spanish teacher. When it comes to my private students, their ages range from young children, to older adults.

I am working towards starting my Masters in Music Performance at the University of North-Texas (UNT). At the moment, I am taking private lessons with professor Terri Sundberg, flute instructor at UNT.

Teaching Style

When it comes to teaching styles, I am a firm believer on the demonstrator approach. A student learns better when someone is showing them what they need to do, rather than saying it without a demonstration.
