About

I have 10 years of experience teaching privately and have been taking private music instruction for most of my life. I graduated from Michigan State University in 2015 with a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies. I studied under the great Rodney Whitaker of Jazz Lincoln Center fame and Randy Napoleon who is most known for his work with Freddy Cole. I have been playing music all my life since my dad taught me my first songs as a child. I play with my own band under the name A.F. Mejia and have recorded with various projects and artists such as The Afternooners and others. Since 2018, I have been with Keys to Success in New York City where I am a lead teacher and head of the guitar faculty. I also taught with 4/4 school of music in Portland, Oregon in 2017. My younger students often perform twice a year at our recitals and at other various performance opportunities. Some students have participated in the Little Mozart national competition. I have had a dedicated student base for many years now. Most of my students I have had since 2019. I take pride in building lasting and meaningful relationships with students of all ages. Helping them through my unique method that is catered to each student's personal needs.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is very friendly and patient while building a strong musical foundation for the student so that they can begin to tackle and understand any piece of music on their own. I believe in an emphasis on technical expertise and then, depending on the students age or interest level, letting the student's musical interests drive the focus in lessons to their individual goals. My job is to help the student get there. If the student has a more general interest or doesn't know which direction they want to go I have a tried and true method that will show the student the many paths that one can go down in their musical journey.

Curriculum

My teaching method includes spending 25% to 33% of the lesson on technique. From there, it really depends on the student's level, their knowledge, and their interests. For a beginning student we would work with a method book for sometime and then finish the lesson working on pieces or songs. For a student that is further along or that is very determined to learn a certain thing we may just spend the rest of the lesson focusing on that. Some of my favorite areas of focus include improvisation, songwriting, and music theory. I also strongly believe in having great resources. This can include method books but it also includes songs, videos, exercises, play-a-longs. Anything that may give a student a new perspective or highlight a new piece of information in a different way is valuable. Each student is different and having the right resources to could be the key to unlocking their potential.
