About

My name is Alexander Scott Herman and I have been teaching drums and performing professionally for the past 15 years. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. There I received a Bachelors of Music with a concentration in Jazz Studies. After graduating I was employed by Carnival Cruise Lines as a Musical Director for their shipboard Entertainment Department for over 6 years.

Before working with Carnival, I was heavily involved in the Richmond, Virginia musical theater scene as a drummer & percussionist. I performed numerous shows including Chicago, Tommy, Pippin, Spelling Bee, and Nunsense.

Recently I spent sometime living in New York City working as a Production Manager with the emmy award winning entertainment company RWS & Associates. I also joined the Momentum Artist team as an Artist Manager. I managed many different artist throughout New York City including acclaimed jazz musician, composer and arranger Mark Berman.

I recently moved to North Florida where I am teaching and performing full time. I am sincerely looking forward to sharing the amazing power of music, entertainment, and the arts through Lessonface.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is extremely adaptive. I have taught students ranging from the ages of 3 to 82 years old. I make it my main priority to recognize that every student I teach has different goals, different musical needs in varying areas, learns and takes in information differently and is at different skill levels on the instrument. I treat every student as the individual they are and tailor my lessons specifically for them to learn and grow as much as possible on the instrument.

Curriculum

My curriculum, just like my teaching style, is specifically geared to each student depending on their musical goals. I like to focus my teaching on three main areas; fundamentals, musical application and staying connected to bringing out the students joy, passion and love for playing the drums. My end goal for every student I teach is to help them develop into not just a proficient drummer, but a true musician.

Some of the other key elements of my teaching curriculum are; rudiments, musical styles, groove & feel, independence, playing along to music, reading music & sight reading and a special instructional program I created to help teach students how to play as if they were sitting in with a live band.
