Allyson Cohen
About
I am a professional violinist and educator with over 10 years of teaching experience, and I hold advanced degrees in violin performance from the University of Michigan. I currently perform as a chamber musician and orchestral violinist and am a member of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. I have maintained a thriving private studio, as well as taught chamber music at the University of Michigan, and private lessons at the Dixboro Music Academy. Alongside my performance career, I am the founder and director of Unison Chamber Music Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to high-level classical music through community-centered performance and education.
I am deeply passionate about helping students grow, not only as violinists, but as confident, curious musicians.
I love working with students of all ages and levels, including adult beginners, and I strive to create a supportive, motivating environment where students feel excited to learn and proud of their progress. Drawing on my experience teaching at the University of Michigan and in diverse learning environments, I bring an empathetic, flexible, and student-centered approach to every lesson.
Teaching Style
My teaching combines strong technical foundations with musical expression, efficient practice strategies, and clear, achievable goals. I tailor each lesson to the individual student, meeting them where they are and helping them build momentum, confidence, and ownership of their playing.
Online lessons are engaging, structured, and highly effective, with clear demonstrations and customized assignments. My goal is to help each student feel inspired, supported, and genuinely excited about their musical growth.
Curriculum
“Allyson has an incredible way of explaining technique so it actually makes sense. I finally feel confident in my playing instead of constantly second-guessing myself.”
“She creates such a supportive and encouraging environment. I always leave lessons feeling motivated and excited to practice, even when we’re working on challenging things.”
“I came back to the violin as an adult after many years away, and Allyson made the process feel approachable and joyful instead of intimidating. I’ve grown more than I thought possible.”
