Amanda Faller
About
Hello! I am Amanda, from Canada. I have over ten years of experience as a private and school teacher and a passion to share my knowledge! For me, teaching is a way of life now and I couldn’t live without it!
I went to the University of Calgary (2014-2018) for music, where I focused on education, pedagogy and French horn performance. II performed in the Wind Ensemble and the Orchestra along with yearly horn recitals. During my time there I was able to take classes on rock style performance and computer-based DAW music production, as well as a practicum as a music teacher for middle school wind ensemble. Although my degree is in French horn, I also play and love piano and guitar.
As a teenager, I performed mellophone and French horn with the local marching band. In my last year I was drum major. I pursued my own education taking private lessons and horn group classes at the Mount Royal Conservatory. I performed at Kiwanis Festival, receiving gold and a brass performance scholarship for my audition to university.
After university, I taught around my city at various studios, one being School of Rock where I taught the preschool classes and guided children’s parties, as well as the older piano students. I taught piano for Connect as an in-home travel teacher. I now teach students from my own home. I was also active in the band world, teaching band-camp workshops for French horn sectionals.
Recently, I have worked as an Early Childhood Educator, having my own classes of infants to preschool-aged children. I have also followed my passion for English, reading, and writing, by completing a TEFL certification for English teaching, expanding my teaching skills.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is warm and encouraging, light and fun, grounded in foundational skills. Although I believe in a fun, engaging and student-centered lesson atmosphere, I take pride in my ability to focus on must-know key elements of theory, practice/performance and listening skills. I am easily adaptable to students' pace and personality, and use their interests to spur excitement and relevance. I meticulously lesson plan to prepare myself to have the most successful class as possible, and I have the experience to adapt and change things as I go.
Curriculum
As a piano teacher, I regularly used the Faber Piano Adventure system, however I always made sure to supplement with online resources, chord lead sheets, or other books in my collection which I have build over time. For theory my preference is the Elementary Rudiments of Music by Wharram. I do not believe in a perfect book series, so I am flexible and make sure my own knowledge and experience informs what I teach from books.
