Andres Guzman
About
I am a professional trombonist from Colombia with over 15 years of experience performing and teaching in both Latin America and the United States. I currently perform with The Orchestra of San Antonio (TOSA) as a bass trombone player and regularly substitute with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles across the country. I am also one of the few active sackbut players in the U.S., performing with The Newberry Consort and other early music groups focused on historically informed performance.
As an educator, I’ve taught at institutions such as the Music Institute of Chicago, Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play program, and Universidad El Bosque in Bogotá. I work with students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced conservatory students.
My teaching style is supportive, structured, and highly adaptable to each student’s needs and goals. I place strong emphasis on sound production, flexibility, breathing, musical expression, and efficient practice habits. For younger or beginner students, I often use the “Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician” method book, along with fun and engaging repertoire. For more advanced students, I focus on orchestral excerpts, solo repertoire, audition preparation, and performance psychology.
I also integrate modern technology into my lessons to enhance learning and engagement. I frequently use tools like drones for intonation training, play-along tracks for rhythmic and musical development, metronome apps, and video recordings for performance feedback.
Whether you are preparing for an audition, improving your fundamentals, or just starting out, I’d be excited to support your musical journey.
Teaching Style
I am a passionate and patient teacher who enjoys working with students of all ages and backgrounds. I take special care when working with young beginners, making sure to build a strong technical and musical foundation from the start. My goal is to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel confident to grow and express themselves. Whether teaching children, teens, or adults, I adapt my methods to fit each student’s needs while maintaining high standards and clear goals.
