About

Ansel Cohen is a freelance cellist hailing from Santa Rosa, CA. Residing in New Jersey he is always in search of new and exciting avenues of collaboration and musical expression. As a live performer, he’s shared the stage with Fuerza Regida, Sofia Carson, Mark O'Connor, Ruff Ryders, Kimberley Locke, and Josh Groban. Ansel’s undergraduate cello studies began at Florida State University with Greg Sauer, continued through Berklee College of Music with Owen Young and Mike Block, and were concluded at Brooklyn College with Nick Canellakis. As a recipient of Brooklyn College’s De Los Mederos Award for excellence in contemporary music he continually strives to expand his spectrum of sound and performance through varying genres and methods.

Teaching Style

I like to work intuitively, finding the most efficient method depending on the student and their prior knowledge/personal goals.

Based on the students goals and interests we can use real world contextual examples and recordings to build a framework of technical knowledge alongside relevant and genre specific approaches. Specialties include anything from classical and traditional approaches to contemporary, rock, jazz, fusion, and americana/bluegrass styles.
