About

Hello!

My name is Anthony Kha and I work full-time as a music educator. I have 15 years total experience teaching music. I started when I was 18 years old teaching guitar, loved it, and then pursued a teaching degree from the University of Alberta. I have teaching experience at the Elementary, Jr. High (Middle), and High School (Sr. High) levels. I’ve worked with my school board for over 8 years and have been a full-time music teacher for all of those years.

I studied saxophone at MacEwan College, and then followed with my Music Education degree at the University of Alberta. Since then, I’ve been focused on learning the trumpet and have taken lessons with the professor of trumpet Gareth Jones at the University of Calgary. Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I love sharing that passion with students of all ages and levels.

Currently I'm playing in Calgary as a member of Hip Hip Thursday, a Hip Hop Jazz Fusion band, and am engaged and working with many other artists as a guest horn player. Recently I found myself being asked to play trumpet on a few of their albums.

I'm also regularly playing as part of the community band organization Westwinds - which is a band for adults who were in band in their high school.

I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge with you and learning from you as much as hopefully you're learning from me!

Teaching Style

My teaching style is rooted in group lesson settings, as much of my focus has been on learning how to teach effectively in a classroom or ensemble environment. That said, I’ve taught private lessons on a variety of instruments over the years, and I think that experience gives me an edge in one-on-one settings. I’m able to explain musical concepts in different ways, and I often draw on techniques from one instrument to help a student understand or improve on another.

I believe in the best of my students, and I believe students should want to be in my lessons! I focus on helping students learn how to practice and build strong fundamentals before jumping into challenging repertoire. In our first lessons, we’ll always start with tone, technique, and breathing—because those are the foundations of great playing. These skills lead to better tone production, which is one of the best things you can bring back to your school band or ensemble.

Curriculum

For Saxophone the primary method books will be the Rubank books, as they are the ones I used in university. Students who wish to study the jazz idiom should also look into the Real Book.

For Trumpet I will primarily reference the Arban and the Clarke Studies. These are the books I used with my trumpet education and contain all the necessary details to fine tune a students' playing. However, if a student is just beginning, I will often reference their band books (if they are taking it at a band level) or use the Elementary Rubanks.
