Callum McMurchie
About
Hi, I'm Callum; I'm an experienced, professional and nurturing tutor, with a Master's in music, teaching guitar to all ages and levels. I've been playing guitar for over 16 years and teaching guitar for over 4 years. Whether you're a complete beginner or you've been playing for a while, I love helping others on their musical journey and I'm here to help you! I've performed live extensively as a solo act, in duos/trios, and in larger original projects and function bands. I've written, recorded and toured my own music and I love to help students find their own musical voice. Alongside my teaching and performing, I've also worked as a music store manager and guitar technician, allowing me to confidently advise you on instrument choices, equipment and maintenance. I believe the combination of my musical education, performance experience and work experience makes me a unique teacher with valuable insights and perspectives. In my downtime, when I'm not writing and recording my own music, I enjoy skiing in the winter, hiking/biking in the summer, and learning about music, psychology and wellness.
Teaching Style
I bring a holistic approach to teaching guitar. Whether you want to learn your favourite songs, start (or continue) writing your own music, develop your technique, understand music theory, or even learn more about recording, we can do it all. I've developed my own philosophy for guitar which I'm very passionate about sharing. Lessons with me are perfect for beginner, intermediate and upper-intermediate players that are looking to learn: timeless songs, guitar techniques, musical concepts, exercises for improvement, functional harmony/theory, visualising the fretboard, and how to play the instrument with more intention. After all, we are supposed to PLAY the instrument! Whether you want to learn pop, rock, blues, funk, jazz or country – on electric or acoustic guitar – I'm confident that I can help you become the musician that you want to be.
Curriculum
My method involves assessing your current level of ability/understanding and allocating time to the key areas that you want to improve. We'll construct a roadmap to get you from where you are now to where you want to be as a musician. We'll divide our time between 'practise' and 'play' in order to progress and improve while keeping things fun. We'll build lessons around the areas that you want to focus on as well as the music that you love. Students don't need any specific texts as I will supply you with custom-made course materials to supplement your learning. However, for what it's worth, I have studied (and I recommend) 'Theory for the Contemporary Guitarist' by Guy Capuzzo, 'Essentials for the Improvising Guitarist' by Lloyd English, and 'Total Guitar Tutor' by Terry Burrows.
