Teaching Style
In my view, the ultimate violinist is one who can imagine something they would like to play and then have the technical and musical prowess to be able to bring that vision to life. With this in mind I like to teach with a flexible approach on the foundation of strong technical fundamentals enabling the creative output of any musician. I am very passionate, kind, patient and supportive. Students should feel that the teacher is an ally against any challenges presented rather than a dictator demanding results. Empowerment through understanding what is and isn't working and what to do to move forward.
My technical fundamentals are developed from 3 decades of playing experience and the guidance of some of the best teachers in the world, Robin Wilson (now at the Royal College formerly at the Australian National Academy of Music), Michele Walsh (one of the most prolific and respected Australian violin teachers with countless international success stories) and William Hennessy (an highly acclaimed Australian music stalwart with a highly intellectual passion for music making).
My teaching style is best suited for students who are curious, dedicated and hungry for real practical solutions to the challenges presented by the wonderful art of violin playing. My youngest student started with me at age 9 and my oldest continues at age 74.
Generally I would suggest students have a sense of self and some degree of maturity before having lessons with me. Students who have never had a violin teacher before would likely have a more productive start with another teacher.
Before starting, in lesson one I establish what I call the "Triangle of Musical Respect".
Respect for the growing musician
Respect for the teacher
Respect for the music itself
