Carlos Felipe Leon Castro
About
Hi! I’m Carlos, a professional violist from Mexico and currently in my final year of the Bachelor of Music program at Illinois State University. As a performer, I have appeared as a soloist with orchestra, presented recitals, and performed in both collegiate and professional orchestras as a section member and principal violist.
Alongside performing, I enjoy teaching students at all levels. I have taught beginners through intermediate students and have also coached college-level musicians. I have participated in a variety of music festivals, including the Mexico Youth National Orchestra, the Lawrence University Chamber Music Festival, and the University of North Texas International String Music Institute (ISMI). I’m passionate about helping students grow as confident, well-rounded musicians while enjoying the learning process.
Teaching Style
For me teaching violin/viola, is more than playing an instrument, is giving a student the opportunity to challenge themselves, both physically and intellectually. I have a holistic approach at the time of playing the instrument, where it is important to take careful attention to your whole body and not just your fingers.
Curriculum
I believe in an all-around approach to learning an instrument. In lessons, we focus on four main areas: scales, technique, etudes, and repertoire. Working on all of these together helps students grow into confident, well-rounded musicians, not just strong in one area.
Lessons are always tailored to each student’s level, goals, and pace of progress, so beginners and more advanced students alike can learn in a supportive and motivating environment.
