About

Hello!

Thank you for considering joining Carmen's Clarinets!

Carmen is an avid clarinetist, based in Northeast Ohio, who has studied and performed for over 15 years. She has had the pleasure of leading a small studio for over a year, and it is now time for her to grow her student base. She plan's to share her passion for pedagogy with as many clarinetists as possible.

Teaching Style

Carmen's teaching style is dictated by the learning speed and drive to grow of each individual student. She creates individualized lesson plans for each new student, making necessary changes as time progresses.

Beginner students: Focus on building positive fundamental habits- introduction to long tones. First sounds, elementary music theory, and introduction to ensemble music. Elementary classical repertoire, or student-catered etudes composed by Carmen are the primary repertoire of focus at this level. Introduce students to active musical listening and study.

Intermediate Students: Technical habits become more complex, building on the foundation taught at the beginner level. Exploring all ranges of the instrument- introduction of clarion and altissimo registers. Introducing more complex music theory ideas like time and key signature. Begin studying chord structure. Beginning leaning into more complex technical exercises and longer long tone exercises. Students at this level will be introduced to full-length classical standard repertoire pieces and complex etudes.

Advanced Students: Shifting focus to musicality- more complex lessons on emoting and storytelling with dynamics, articulation and breath.  Explore and learn complex music theory concepts lincluding complex key signatures, chord structures and time signatures. College admittance coaching for audition, interviews and college/conservatory visits.

Curriculum

Carmen's teaching methods start at: listening to students, striving for growth, and mindful pedagogy. She stresses physical and mental mindfullness to encourage students to be fully aware of their playing mechanisms (breath support, posture and embrochure).
