About
I have been deeply involved with music for nearly 25 years. At the age of 12, I started private classical voice training with a professional coach. Music (specifically singing) has been a major part of my personality ever since. When I first started singing, I didn't have any money for professional lessons. But my teacher believed that I had potential, so she allowed me to work in her garden in exchange for lessons. She was tough on me. I can't tell you how many times she had me start an entire song over from the beginning just because I didn't hit that one note quite right. But I believe it was her toughness that helped push me to become the confident bass singer that I am today!
I have competed in several competitions such as National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Oklahoma Music Teachers Association (OMTA), Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OMEA), National American Choral Directors Association, as well as many others. I even had the privilege of singing on PBS as a teenager!
I continued to study music in college where I became proficient in courses such as vocal pedagogy, music theory, beginning piano, international phonetic pronunciation (specifically Italian, French, and German), and general vocal management practices.
Even after university, music is still in my soul. I am currently writing and recording my own music. I hope to publish my own album very soon now!
My amazing voice teacher recently passed away. But before that, she charged me with the mission of helping others find their voices. So that's why I'm here - to help you build confidence with your singing. Maybe someday, you too will go on to inspire and teach others.
During college, I took on my own private student and instructed them in vocal and breathing technique. We met once a week to practice and add to their repertoire. Additionally, I spent time volunteering for the Mission OKC where I taught and mentored underprivileged kids in the city.
Teaching Style
I would describe my teaching style as tough, yet positive. I want to push you slightly out of your comfort zone, but I also want you to feel comfortable and confident during class. I know all too well how nerve-wracking it can be to sing in front of others. My goal is to help you improve your skills in all styles of singing, while also helping you become more at-ease with singing in front of a crowd. I welcome all skill levels - from beginner to advanced. I want you leave every class with a smile and a sense of accomplishment.
Curriculum
All music and texts (for music theory) will be provided by myself. You are welcome to bring your own music if you have something specific you want to learn/practice. I have a collection of songbooks in a variety of musical styles. It all depends on what you want to learn.
In our first class, we will meet to hear your vocal range and learn about your goals for class. After that, I will draft a program tailored specifically to your needs.
