Hello, my name is Chris. I’m a cello and guitar teacher here in Des Moines, IA
I’ve been teaching for over 11 years, with the last 8 years being mostly online private lessons.
I love helping students find their joy in music. While we will focus on technical skills, I want students to learn about themselves and develop their own voices in and out of the music world.
College
I studied cello performance and composition at SUNY Fredonia; Audio Engineering and Entertainment Business at Full Sail University; Jazz performance and arranging at SUNY Fredonia and Nashville Jazz Workshop. I've studied cello under Nissa Sampson, Dan Allcott, and Cody Hiller; Carnatic music under Shiva Bhat and Adarsha Ramakumar.
Certifications and Continuing Education
- RCM: Grade 8 Music Theory
- Trinity - Grade 5 Music Theory
- Suzuki: Every Child Can
- Music ConstructED: Safety and Inclusivity Training
Success looks different for everyone. My adult students have gone on to be in worship groups and community orchestras, record albums, and compose their own music.
Elementary and high school students have earned first chair in the orchestra, gone on to All-County and even All-State orchestras, and raised their NYSSMA rating from Good to Outstanding.

If you're looking for a guitar teacher who is not only knowledgeable but also makes you feel confident and supported, Christopher is the perfect choice. His support and encouragement have been invaluable, and I truly appreciate all the help he's given me. In summary, Christopher is an exceptional electric guitar teacher, and I can't recommend him highly enough.
Knowledgeable and relatable with clear instructions on how to progress. Would recommend!
Wonderful teacher!
Excellent teacher! Totally approachable & interested in helping me attain my goals. Patient, kind, helpful. Great sense of humor!
Very responsive and flexible. Was the first tutor that provided homework assignments which is wonderful!
Chris was very patient with my son who has a traumatic brain injury!
Chris knows his stuff and he picked out where I haven't been successful in the past right away. Look forward to future lessons.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first lesson with Christopher. He took the time to be sure I was holding the bow correctly and holding the cello comfortably -- things that are so necessary to enjoy playing the cello. I am looking forward to learning from him.
I am excited to have Christopher as a teacher. He takes the time to be sure you are doing what you should be doing as far as technique -- making sure the foundation is good so I can build upon it as a student. I thoroughly enjoyed my first lesson.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time learning music with Chris. I definitely would not be as musically great as I am now without his amazing teaching abilities. He is really funny and a fantastic person to be with. Thank you Chris for being the best teacher ever.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the many years of playing and learning music with Chris. I definitely would not be as musically great as I am now without his amazing teaching abilities. He really puts in his best work and effort into helping his students. He is also very funny and a great person to be with. Thank you Chris for being the best teacher ever.
A very friendly, helpful but also very focused and professional teacher!
First lesson went great! I feel like I'm on the right track with Chris and that he has a good idea of what i need and has a good plan for getting me to the next level with my cello playing and music composition. I'm looking forward to my next lessons!
My 10-year-old son (Ari) took his first cello lesson with Chris today and he has learned a lot from Chris! Chris is such a patient and fun teacher. He knows how to work with kids and help them improve their skills. I'd highly recommend Chris.
My son Brendan took cello lessons online with Chris Bell for a few years. We didn't have many options in our area and we weren't sure how online would work with an instrument such as cello where physical form and technique are important to progress. Chris is a enthusiastic and gifted teacher with a tremendouslove of music that he passes on to his students. The online lessons were the highlight of my son's week and Chris is great at making online work for cello. Chris introduced a wide variety of genres to keep my son engaged (even ones he did not like at first). If there was a piece my son was interested in or wanted to learn for the school music ministry, Chris worked it into their lessons. My son made enough progress within a year to play in a music group at school which just reinforced his love of cello. Chris was also great at checking in with us parents to get feedback on how we thought the lessons were going. I think that the only thing we missed were having recitals but we knew that such would be difficult going into this. We cannot more heartily recommend Chris Bell as a teacher. Working with him was a great decision that improved our son's life.
super fun!!!
awesome!!
Chris is a great teacher. I really appreciate how he tries very hard to accommodate my specific goals and interests. He's also easy to talk to and supportive. Thanks Chris!
I've taken lessons from a few people in my life. While they've all been good teachers, they've mostly just taught me how to play like they do and learn what they want. Chris is the exact opposite. He custom tailors lesson plans based on your goals and interests as a musician while introducing you to new music and concepts you didn't even know you were interested in. He's encouraging, supportive and flexible and the breadth of his musical knowledge (including theory, history, technique, various instruments) is staggering to say the least. On top of all that, he's a generally good guy (I've known him for many years outside of lessons so I can say that with confidence). I highly recommend Chris as a music teacher if you are looking to develop your skills and authenticity as a musician. I hope to continue learning from him for years to come.
Chris is an excellent, knowledgeable teacher who is genuinely committed to helping his students learn. I am an adult student and have greatly enjoyed my lessons with Chris.
Good lesson
Gabe really enjoyed his first online lesson! Looking forward to seeing how he progresses from week to week.
Chris is the man. I am an adult learner and he made it super fun. We laughed a lot - and I learned a lot too! Super excited to start this journey with Chris.
Updated review after having Chris teach my youngest for several months now. Chris is honestly one of the best teachers we have had. He checks in, follows up, monitors my son's lessons in school to stay in sync, and provides me guidance to help my son practice and enjoy. He takes in his learning style combined with our goals. Highly recommend!
Excellent teacher! Patient, understanding, and experienced in teaching. Walked me through all the basics expertly and made playing the cello much more within reach. Looking forward to the next lesson!
Chris is a fantastic instructor. My son has been taking lessons with Chris for a while now and Chris keeps him engaged, curious and excited about music in general and lessons as well. We have tried various teachers for other things on ****** and elsewhere, and Chis really stands apart. He follows up and checks in with me every so often, really listens to interests and feedback, pushes my son to move out of his comfort zone while still having fun. We were interested in one of the more formal guitar programs (that is commonly available in UK and only now starting in the US) and he has been very engaged, helpful and really personally invested in helping us navigate that process. He is a great teacher (really a true partner in learning) and just a fun and thoughtful person in general.
is going to be an absolute delight to work with!
Chris is so good at zeroing in on how to improve and being positive in his support!
Christopher is the best...quickly and easily sees where you are and tailors lessons to suit.
Great first lesson! Chris meets you where you are and is really focused on the tiny details that can make a difference.
I have taken three classes with Chris so far. I have found him to be personable and patient. He explains things very well. He doesn't make me feel uncomfortable if I don't understand something. Overall I have had a great experience with Chris and would highly recommend him.
Chris is a very helpful and kind instructor. Highly recommend lessons with him.
Super thorough on explaining improvisations, techniques and music theory. I enjoyed learning new ways to approach the cello and music :)
My 8-year old has had a few lessons with Christopher and we have been very pleased. Christopher is a conscientious educator and connected with our son. He seems to have mastered the art of teaching an instrument to a beginner virtually as well. He also took the time to have a conversation with me before the lesson to understand our goals and his methods. I highly recommend him as a teacher.
Chris is great, very adaptable and knowledgeable! I highly recommend him!
so fun
Fantastic teacher!
Chris is a great guy and a very knowledgeable instructor. He uses a variety of teaching techniques to make sure I can accomplish the desired skill. If you're looking for an accomplished cellist who can relate to students of all musical levels, look no further.
Chris is great communicator and able to think about my specific needs as a student.
Great Teacher.......thorough, patient, and good at communicating and demonstrating technique during lesson.
The Best
Patient and works to m help make my weakness into a strength.
Chris is a really awesome teacher. Has a lot of expertise teaching online, and has many tips for cello learning for all ages. I'm in my 40s , picked up the cello again 2 years ago, and with Chris I've become a confident learner of the cello while having a lot of fun! Yay!! Thanks Chris!
so fun!!!
I like how he is confident in me that he can throw me into new projects for me to learn every time we have a new lesson.
If you are thinking about learning the cello or you have a family member or friend, you WANT THIS TEACHER! Chris is a wonderful, easy-going teacher who will musically meet you where you are, beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Don't pass this opportunity to take lessons with Mr.Bell!
He has a lot of patience for first timers.. I really appreciate it, thank you, as always!
very thorough in my teachings
Chris is the best!
If you're looking for someone who is PATIENT with an older learner, Chris is your man!
I feel so much more comfortable with the Cello than I did before! I am shocked at how much you can learn on a WebCam. He was very friendly and very informative. I can’t wait for my lesson next week!
Great guy! Always teaches at instructional level.
My grandson son says Chris has a great attitude and flair and is really looking forward to his next lesson! I think they hit it off well with a great student/teacher communication Thank you Chris! Jordan says see you at the next lesson!!!

hes making uch better.me m
Excellent! Can’t wait for my next lesson. Chris was informative, humorous and easy going.
So glad I chose Chris as my online music teacher! He's a lot of fun.
Great first lesson!
Chris is an excellent teacher - focused both on the big map of where I'd like to travel and also where we are at the moment. He's thoughtful and tuned in to every detail of my playing and form. He's also very positive and an awful lot of fun!
Christopher is an excellent teacher! Very knowledgeable, insightful, helpful and enthusiastic about teaching and learning.
Chris is a great instructor and my daughter looks forward to her cello lesson with Chris!
Chris's style of teaching and breadth of musical styles and genre was a breath of fresh air. After 4 years of strictly classical Suzuki method, it was time to try something new to keep my 12 year old daughter interested. She and Chris are currently transposing a Queen song so my daughter can play it on cello. Chris's teaching style is laid back and the lessons are largely directed by the student's interests, which is just what was needed in our case.
This instructor was uninterested in what I wanted. He would often say whatever you want and then not do it. When I first brought it to his attention that I was unhappy with the lesson is when I should have canceled them. 8 lessons 4 months and only halfway through Suzuki book one is unacceptable. Just a waste of time and money.
Chris makes learning fun
good teacher
good teaching
Christopher is a fantastic teacher! He makes everything fun and is great with my son who is just beginning guitar. Highly recommended!
This lesson was great. Chris is an excellent teacher, and is giving me just enough of a challenge to keep me interested. I feel I will learn to play the ukulele very well with Chris as my teacher. I look forward to my next lesson.
Today was my first lesson with Chris. Things went very well. I'm not new to music, but I'm a complete beginner on the ukulele. Chris is taking that knowledge and putting together a lesson approach that will teach me how to play the ukulele well, and help me to achieve my goals. I look forward to many more productive lessons with Chris as I sense he is a great teacher.
Very relaxed, but thorough.
Christopher is a patient, enthusiastic, eloquent teacher. I always look forward to my weekly lesson.
Chris is very friendly teacher. My son enjoys the lesson w/him.
We are really happy we found Chris. He is great! Always in a good mood and ready on time. My son is autistic and really needed the right fit for a teacher and we found it.
Only one lesson so far, but I think Chris is going to be a huge asset for my cello skills. Extremely friendly and easy to talk with. Explains techniques and concepts in an easy to understand fashion.
Chris is a great guy and insightful teacher. Lesson was great.
I've had a great experience!
Today was my first lesson and I left feeling all the more educated and on the road to improvement, as I had hoped. Chris was very friendly, knowledgeable, communicated well, and I felt at ease. I also love his flexibility. All around what i am needing in a teacher.
Super friendly and knowledgeable
Really great first lesson, can’t wait for more :)
Christopher is a wonderful instructor. He is enthusiastic about teaching, patient, and excited to help is students reach their goals.
He is clear and concise, which I appreciated given we only had 30 mins. He included not only how to play, but how to structure practice!
great start. looking fwd to working with Chris
Really helpful! I'm already starting to solo and it's only been 3 weeks!
I'm very grateful to have found a teacher as generous as Chris. Since reviewing is so important in our culture anymore, I always like to get a good sampling before constructing a review. Chris shows consistently that he listens to his students, offers positive critique, and molds his approach to meet the student where they are. Chris makes it easy, fun and relaxing to learn. It isn't hard to gather that Chris is a professional and experienced teacher. I am a very beginner, adult student, and I can appreciate how Chris can teach a spectrum of students at different skill and experience levels. Thanks to Chris for making my hobby to learn an instrument such a dream!
Man of Great Patience, helps those who flounders. Questions o' many, he'll answer in plenty.
We adore him more with every lesson. He is patient and flexible!
another awesome lesson!
Great!
So far so good. After my first lesson I feel like I have learned so much. Chris was fun and informative. He took into account what I wanted and needed to learn and gave me plenty of stuff to work on. I was a little unsure about the online format but with a little tweaking on my end it was fine. Looking forward to my next lesson!
great lesson, can't wait for the next one
He was so patient with my absolute beginner!
My daughter is an absolute beginner and was very nervous, but Chris was patient and personable. We learned so much in an hour! She can't wait for her next lesson.
Chris has a warm and easy-going personality that makes learning comfortable and easy. He is very patient and kind. Hea the definition of what a good teacher should be.
I've had something like 6 or 8 lessons with Chris so far and he's awesome. If you're not sure what to work on he'll come up with a great "standard" curriculum for you, but if you have particular interests or tastes he tailors your lessons accordingly - which keeps you motivated and makes practicing fun. He's got a huge range and can easily switch between styles if you have diverse interests. He's also cool about letting you decide how much focus you want to put on theory and learning to read music, so you never feel like you're just grinding through anything in order to get to the fun stuff. He's also just a really nice, funny dude so lessons are enjoyable from start to finish. I especially like the games he uses to teach various techniques/sight reading/improving your ear, etc. Really glad I ended up taking lessons with Chris, can't recommend him enough. :-)
Super professional, helpful, and flexible to what I know and would like to focus on. Chris is great!
After my first lesson with Chris, I knew I had found the right teacher for me. He's extremely patient and thorough--and has a great sense of humor which made it more relaxed. I wasn't sure how taking virtual lessons would go, but I enjoy the convenience of in-home learning!
he is a really good teacher. i myself am having trouble switching ears from classical to blues.
Chris was warm and friendly. I was very at ease with him. He had a great sense of humor which put me at ease and made learning easier.
super cool and funny. he has a really good understanding of music theory.
Really enjoying the online lessons with Chris. I am learning so much!
Chris is easy to talk to and does a great job explaining techniques and practical approaches to playing. Looking forward to many more lessons.
Super helpful as always. Great technique advice.
Christopher is patient, good listener, and enthusiastic, all the important element of a good teacher.
He was very patient with me! Thank you!!
Christopher is very knowledgeable and has a great personality which makes learning a lot easier.
Chris has been an amazing cello instructor! He does a great job explaining how your body should feel when you're bowing (great for a first time string student) and hand positions. He really helps you integrate cello practice into whatever time you have for it and you can tell he really has a passion for the instrument and knows it well. On top of it all, he's just a really nice, fun person and the lessons fly by!

Teaching Style
An old teacher used to say to me all the time, "I'm not teaching you how to play cello; I'm teaching you how to teach yourself to play cello."
I will do the same for you on whatever instrument.
Learning an instrument is only part of the journey, though. My goal is to also teach students about themselves, their learning styles, how to self-evaluate, motivate, and show themselves compassion on the harder days.
Curriculum
While every student is different, and my job is to help you reach your goals, these are some common paths for each subject.
Cello
I typically start with the Suzuki books; around Book 3, we'll incorporate Lee's 40 Easy Etudes, Sevick Op. 3, and other material to fit the student's goals.
I've also helped students
- Play in church
- Compose
- High school, and college auditions
- Utilize different electronics, pedals, looping, and all other manners of making a cello sound not like a cello.
Guitar
Guitar is a bit more diverse in student goals, and that's what I love about it. I encourage the learning of music theory, how to read staff notation, and in learning different styles(fingerpicking, chord melodies, rhythm, lead guitar). I have helped students pass their Rockschool RSL exams in grades 1-5. I do tend to use the books: Guitar Aerobics, Pumping Nylon, Hal Leonard, and more.
I've helped students
- Write songs
- Record
- Sing and play at the same time
