Chris Collier
About
My name is Chris Collier and I am a professional musician living and working in Nashville, Tennessee. I have been gigging professionally since 2015 and teaching private lessons since 2014. My main touring gig right now is with the War and Treaty, and I also play with other acts like Amythyst Kiah, The Kentucky Gentlemen, Kylie Morgan, Safari Room, and others when I can! I've played in front of crowds of more than 26k and played multiple times on national television. I've toured playing blues, funk, and country, but I also play quartet gospel at church when I'm in town, do sessions for RnB, pop, and folk artists, and write a bit with artists that I've played with for awhile. All of this experience means that I can help you whether your goal is to play in a band, audition for college music programs, write your own songs, work within a DAW, develop your general musicianship, or just learn your favorite songs!
The list of artists I have worked for includes: The War and Treaty, Kylie Morgan, Doug McCormick, Brother Maven, Aberdeen, Cody Webb, Arlana, The 12 South Band, the 8 South Band, Safari Room, Colleen Orender, Kiera Loveless, Natalie Johnson, Katie Davis, Chip Colon, Faith Jackson, Hopscotch Mafia, Julia Allen, and more. I've recorded lead guitar on records for The War and Treaty, Jaye Madison, Arlana, Chip Colon, Monica Hutcheson, Safari Room, Miranda Powell, as well as others. I perform every week around Nashville, nearly every weekend in different states across the country, and have toured internationally through Europe and Canada.
I graduated from Belmont University in the Spring of 2018 with a degree in Commercial Music, so I have had the "conservatory training" in regards to music theory and history, but also have the real world experience to know what a player actually needs to sound like a pro.
Teaching Style
Are you interested in being able to confidently play lead and rhythm parts in a band? Want to learn to write songs? Want to learn to just strum along to your favorite records by yourself? I will teach you or your child all of the knowledge and tools needed to do whatever your dream is on your instrument. My aim is to help every student achieve their personal goals on their instrument within the context of a relaxed and patient environment that promotes a love of music!
I achieve this by:
1) Individualizing lesson plans so that each student stays engaged and learns in the style that is best for them as learners.
2) Ensuring that students learn BOTH how to play their instrument as well as the theory behind what they are playing. This creates a more well-rounded musician that is capable of problem solving on their instrument and being able to play in a variety of settings.
Curriculum
Every lesson a student takes with me is individualized to help that student reach their goals. While I am very interested in growing everybody's general musicianship and filling in gaps in one's knowledge or ability, I also am not going to force that on students that have a very singular goal in mind. I am here to serve YOU.
In terms of materials, following every lesson a student has with me they will receive:
1) A copy of the Zoom lesson recording to come back and review as much as they want to while practicing. This is INVALUABLE to growing and getting maximum value out of our time together.
2) Visual copies of all PDFs referred to within the lesson.
3) A detailed homework summary of what to work on before our next lesson together.
These post lesson emails are organized to save a student time when practicing so you can get straight to what matters: the music!
