Chris Schultz
About
Hi! I’m Chris — a NYC-based drummer, music director, and educator who’s spent the last decade-plus performing, touring, and helping build shows with Blue Man Group. I’ve played thousands of shows across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, trained new performers, and held multiple Music Director roles with the company.
Outside of BMG, I’ve played in Broadway and Off-Broadway environments — including subbing on Drag: The Musical and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 — and I’m active in the NYC scene as a drummer, composer, and producer. I love jumping between theater, pop/rock, studio work, and anything groove-heavy or weird in the best way.
Teaching has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve taught students of all ages for years through various programs, the NYC DOE, and private instruction. My approach is relaxed, supportive, and very real-world: we work on groove, feel, timing, and musicality — the stuff that actually makes you sound great in a band, on a gig.
Whether you're totally new to drums, getting back into it, or looking to level up your technique, time feel, chops, or theater playing, I’m here to help you grow in a way that feels fun and personal. Let’s build your confidence, expand your musical vocabulary, and get you playing the kind of things that make you excited to sit down at the kit.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is relaxed, supportive, and built around helping you become a musical, confident, and expressive drummer. I focus on the fundamentals that make drumming feel good — groove, touch, dynamics, technique, and musical awareness — while tailoring every lesson to your goals and personality.
I love using real music as a teaching tool, so we’ll spend time learning songs you enjoy, breaking down drum parts, and understanding how drummers make creative choices. I’m big on helping students develop a strong sense of feel and musicality, not just chops or speed.
