Christine Murphy
About
Hello! My name is Christine Murphy. I am a passionate flutist and educator based in Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2019, I have performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Flute. In addition to orchestral performance, I perform frequently in chamber and solo settings both locally and nationally. I maintain a small, private studio in Baltimore where I teach flutists of all ages and abilities.
My background: I am originally from Chicago, Illinois. I studied at the Juilliard School with Robert Langevin and Leone Buyse at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, from which I earned a Masters in Music in Flute Performance. Additionally, I hold a B.A. from Columbia University in Political Science.
I have earned solo prizes from organizations including the YoungArts Foundation, the National Flute Association, the Music Teacher’s National Association, amongst many others. Recently, I served on the faculty of the Atlantic Music Festival, at Colby College. Additionally, I have presented masterclasses at venues including the University of Maryland.
Teaching Style
First and foremost, I believe in teaching the fundamentals of flute playing and basic principles of musicianship! Additionally, I focus on teaching practicing methods and performance strategies. These skills apply beyond music and are deeply helpful for all students, including those not looking to professionally pursue music.
I aim to motivate students through encouragement and instilling self confidence. I encourage my students to participate in competitions and perform challenging repertoire to maintain a constant state of growth.
For those pursuing professional auditions, I offer comprehensive and rigorous coaching on orchestral excerpts. I also will advise on structuring your audition preparation, managing performance anxiety and navigating through trial weeks and probationary periods.
Curriculum
My favorite flute method books:
Trevor Wye, Tone
Phillipe Bernold, La Technique d'Embouchure
Taffanel and Gaubert, 17 Daily Exercises
