Christopher Payne
About
I am a professionally trained violinist with a classical foundation and deep experience in improvisation, world music, and contemporary styles. I studied in England at Dartington College of Arts and completed postgraduate jazz studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London.
I have worked across virtually every musical genre and bring a unique, highly practical approach to teaching. Rather than forcing students into a single method, I give you the tools to play a style authentically and to develop your own musical voice. Expression, sound, and musical understanding are central to my teaching—not just notes on the page.
I have taught hundreds of students and understand technique from the ground up, whether you are a beginner needing solid foundations or an advanced player who feels stuck. I specialize in improvisation, alternative styles, and playing by ear—areas many traditional teachers struggle to teach effectively.
I am also an expert in electric strings and can help you choose and set up the right instrument, amplification, and effects. While violin is my primary instrument, I also teach viola, mandolin, and cello.
If you feel that conventional lessons haven’t given you what you need—especially in improvisation, stylistic freedom, or musical confidence—I can help you move forward clearly and efficiently.
Teaching Style
Improvisation is a core specialty, including jazz, rock, and world music. I focus on non-classical approaches while grounding students in solid classical technique, then show them how to adapt and expand that technique for alternative styles. I also specialize in electric strings and help students develop sound, setup, and stylistic control beyond traditional acoustic playing.
Curriculum
If you are looking for a different approach, you are in the right place. I teach solid, standard technique, but I also go well beyond what most traditional teachers offer. My aim is to develop well-rounded musicians who can read music, play by ear, and improvise with confidence.
Ear training is a central part of my teaching, and I integrate it directly into instrument work rather than treating it as a separate subject. I also guide students who want to move into alternative styles, with clear, practical methods for understanding and entering the style of your choice in an authentic way.
