About

I’m a classically trained musician and educator with over 23 years of experience teaching in Ontario’s public school system, including 9 years as an elementary music specialist. I hold a B.Mus (History and Theory), ARCT (Flute performance), and B.Ed., with an Additional Qualification in Special Education, and I specialize in adaptive, inclusive teaching for learners of all backgrounds.

As a performer, I served as first chair flautist in the Brampton Symphony Orchestra, and I’m an active performer with cover bands for fun.  I also hold RCM Grade 8 in violin and RCM Grade 6 in piano.

Thanks to my classroom experience, I can confidently teach the fundamentals of all band instruments—except drums and guitar—making me a strong resource for beginners and school-aged learners navigating ensemble playing. My teaching blends technical precision with creative expression, and I love helping students unlock their musical voice—whether they’re preparing for RCM exams, joining a school band, or just exploring music for the love of it.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is adaptive, inclusive, and student-centered. I draw on over two decades of experience in public education and over three decades in private instruction to tailor each lesson to the learner’s goals, strengths, and challenges. Whether you’re preparing for a formal exam, learning to improvise in a cover band, or exploring music for the first time, I meet you where you are and help you grow with confidence.

I enjoy working with neurodiverse learners and students with exceptionalities, using strategies that support communication differences and differentiated pacing and approach.  Lessons are structured but flexible, with room for creativity, exploration, and humor. I emphasize strong fundamentals—technique, theory, and musicality—while encouraging personal expression and joy in the process.

Curriculum

When building strong foundational skills, I draw on time-tested resources that support progressive learning and musical confidence. For piano students, I often use Edna Mae Burnam’s Step by Step series, which offers a clear, incremental approach to technique and reading. For wind instruments, I prefer A Tune a Day and the Rubank series, both of which provide solid technical development and musical variety.

That said, I’m always happy to support students using materials provided by their school band programs. I believe consistency between private and classroom instruction helps learners thrive, and I’m comfortable adapting to whichever method books their band teacher has chosen.
