Dan Williams
About
I am a jazz pianist studying for a BA in Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire (2023–2026), following a foundation year in jazz (2022–2023). I perform regularly as a solo pianist at The Majestic Hotel by Hilton in Harrogate (2023–present) and play in various ensembles both within and outside my university curriculum. I have also performed in jazz and progressive rock bands in and out of university curriculum. In addition to performing, I have been teaching jazz piano privately since 2022, offering lessons both online and in person. My students range from beginners to advanced players, and I tailor my approach to each individual’s needs. My teaching philosophy is to simplify complex concepts using justifiable shortcuts, ear training, and structured learning methods to help students internalize music naturally.
Teaching Style
My teaching is centered on pattern recognition and practical application. I guide students to recognize harmonic and melodic shapes, apply them to repertoire, and develop a structured, enjoyable system for playing. Lessons are available both in-person and online, with durations ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour. I teach students of all levels, from beginners to advanced musicians. I also provide external reference materials, including recordings and written exercises, to reinforce key concepts.
Curriculum
My approach emphasizes ear training, improvisation, and theoretical understanding through practical exercises. I focus on helping students internalize music naturally while also learning key theoretical concepts. Recommended texts include: Bill Evans Omnibook for Piano (Hal Leonard),The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine and The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine.
