About

Dana Watson used to have a variety of handcraft hobbies, but they all fell to the wayside when she discovered temari in 2005. She is a member of the Japan Temari Association, and in 2016 traveled to Japan to learn more about regional temari styles. She has been teaching at the John C. Campbell Folk School since 2014, and enjoys every opportunity to addict new students to this fascinating craft, both in person in North Carolina and virtually around the world.

Teaching Style

My goal as a temari instructor is to give my students a solid grounding in basic techniques, so they can begin combining those techniques and exploring their own designs as soon as possible. I encourage my students to improvise, iterate, and experiment in whatever ways speak to them most as creative individuals. The possibilities of temari design are endless!

Curriculum

My most recommended texts are Barbara Suess's Japanese Temari: A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft (for true beginners) and Temari Techniques (for more intermediate students).
