Elizabeth Perez-Hickman

I’m a Venezuelan-American oboist currently pursuing my master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship by the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, where I study with Sherry Sylar of the New York Philharmonic. I previously earned my bachelor’s degree from the Peabody Institute on the Excellence in Music Leadership scholarship. I’ve performed with ensembles including the New World Symphony and the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and in venues ranging from the Library of Congress and the Hollywood Bowl to community spaces such as hospitals, museums, and libraries.

Alongside my performing career, I maintain an active private studio and enjoy working with students at different stages of their musical journey. I’m passionate about expanding access to music education and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, and I value creating a positive, welcoming space for learning.

When I’m not performing or making reeds, I enjoy photography, managing social media for music organizations, and spending time with dogs around my New York neighborhood!

My teaching focuses on building strong fundamentals while encouraging students to be curious and confident! My goal is to help students develop a clear, healthy approach to the oboe through thoughtful work on tone, technique, and musical expression. Lessons are structured but flexible, and I adapt based on the student’s age, level, and goals.

I place a strong emphasis on efficient practice habits and problem-solving skills so students feel prepared when practicing on their own. Whether a student is preparing for auditions, youth orchestra repertoire, or personal milestones, I try to make lessons both focused and supportive. Above all, I want students to feel challenged, motivated, and excited to continue growing as musicians!
