Emile Kanaan
About
Hello! I’m Emile Kanaan, a professional Oud player, educator, and conservatory graduate with over 12 years of experience performing and teaching Arabic music. I hold a Baccalaureate in Oud from the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor’s in Music and Musicology from Antonine University.
Throughout my career, I’ve taught Oud to students of all levels across the Middle East, both privately and at institutions like École d’Art et de Musique, Solo Academy, and Kfoury Music. My performance experience includes appearances at the Cairo Opera House, collaborations with renowned artists like Marcel Khalife, and contracts with 5-star venues such as Sofitel Bahrain.
My mission is to share the rich tradition of Arabic music with passion, precision, and a personal touch — helping each student connect deeply with this timeless art form.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is student-centered, adaptable, and grounded in both classical technique and expressive musicality. I focus on:
-
Building strong foundational skills in Oud technique and theory
-
Exploring classical, traditional, and improvisational Arabic music
-
Adapting to each student’s goals, pace, and musical preferences
-
Creating a warm, encouraging environment where students feel inspired to grow
Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician looking to refine your sound, I offer structured yet flexible lessons tailored to your unique journey.
Curriculum
My method blends academic structure with artistic expression. I typically start with right- and left-hand technique, maqam theory, rhythmic training, and gradually build toward improvisation (taqsim) and full-song performances.
Depending on the student’s level and interest, I incorporate:
-
Notation exercises and classical Arabic pieces
-
Traditional repertoire from countries like Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq
-
Ear training, composition basics, and improvisational techniques
Recommended materials and songs are introduced progressively and customized to each student's development and cultural background. No previous music-reading experience is required — I meet students where they are and grow with them.
