About

Most guitarists quit because their lessons are either all over the place with no structure — or way too rigid to feel like music. My approach strikes the balance.

I’m a guitarist with over 10 years of experience, a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from St. Francais Xavier University, and a passion for helping students sound like they’re really playing music — not just memorizing shapes.

If you’re a beginner, I’ll get you off YouTube tutorials and onto a path that actually makes sense, with music you enjoy from day one. If you’ve been playing for a while but feel stuck in scales or strumming the same old songs, I’ll show you how to improvise and give you the tools to make creative choices when you play.

I’ve taught kids, teens, and adults at Sunnyside Music School, the Ottawa Conservatory, and privately since 2022. I work with guitarists of all levels — from absolute beginners to players who want a deeper understanding of the instrument and the music they love. Wherever you’re starting from, the goal is the same: to give you the tools and confidence to find your own voice on the guitar.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is rooted in listening — not just to music, but to you. Every student has different goals, so I adapt while keeping a clear plan in place. You’ll always know where we’re headed, but the path is tailored to you.

For beginners, that usually means building confidence with the basics — chords, rhythm, and simple songs — so you can feel like you’re actually playing music right away.

For intermediate players, we’ll dig deeper into phrasing, theory, and the “why” behind the sounds you love. I’ll show you how to break down music technically and theoretically, then use those tools to create your own sound.

Expect lessons that balance structure with exploration: focused enough to keep you progressing, open enough to let your curiosity and creativity thrive.

Curriculum

Most lessons start with a quick warm-up — maybe a scale pattern, rhythm drill, or bit of ear training — just enough to get your hands and ears moving. From there, we dive into songs and concepts that connect directly to your goals.

For beginners, that might mean learning chords, strumming and picking patterns, and practical tips to break through common technical plateaus. The goal is to get you making real music quickly, while building the foundation for long-term growth.

For intermediate players, we may focus on mapping out the guitar using the CAGED system, or breaking down your favorite songs and solos so you can understand what makes them work — and recreate those sounds yourself.

I’ll pull in standard resources when they’re useful — like The Real Book or curated exercises — but most of our work stays hands-on and personalized. The focus is always the same: to keep lessons musical, practical, and rooted in the songs that inspire you.
