About

Habinaya Karthik – Bharatanatyam Dancer & Instructor

I’m Habinaya Karthik from India – a passionate and dedicated classical dancer and instructor with over 15 years of experience in Bharatanatyam, and 7+ years of teaching students across all levels – from beginners to advanced.

I’m also a performing artist, having presented Bharatanatyam at renowned sabhas in Chennai, popular temples in and around the city, and at international sabhas that celebrate Indian classical arts across borders.

Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest and most revered classical dance forms. Rooted in devotion and tradition, it originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu and is known for its powerful combination of nritta (pure dance), nritya (expressive storytelling), and natya (drama). This art form goes beyond movement—it's a spiritual expression, a narrative, and a cultural legacy.

My classes offer:

Strong foundational training in adavus and core techniques

Abhinaya-focused sessions to master expression and rasa

Talam and theory understanding to deepen the art

A nurturing and disciplined space for every student

Whether you’re beginning your journey or seeking to refine your artistry, I am here to guide you through this beautiful path of rhythm, expression, and devotion—online and worldwide.

Let’s keep the spirit of Bharatanatyam alive, together.

Teaching Style

My Teaching Style

I specialize in teaching the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, a graceful and expressive bani known for its fluid movements, rich abhinaya, and emphasis on lasya (grace). This style stands out for its dramatic presentation, expansive movements, and vibrant stage presence—making it a beautiful and engaging approach for both performers and audiences.

In my classes, we begin with a strong foundation, starting from the basic adavus, learning each set step-by-step with precision and clarity. Alongside the practical lessons, I incorporate the essential theoretical aspects of Bharatanatyam, including hand gestures (mudras), eye movements (drishti bhedas), head movements (shiro bhedas), and body postures (anga shuddhi).

Students are also introduced to basic talam (rhythm structure), gradually progressing to more complex talams as they advance. Once the full basic course is completed, we move into repertoire training, where I teach choreographies set to the talam of each song, allowing students to understand rhythm, emotion, and storytelling in performance.

The aim is to develop technical strength, expressive depth, and cultural understanding, nurturing each student into a confident and soulful dancer.
