About
Internationally active Canadian composer and music theorist (M.Mus from the HfMDK Frankfurt; B.Mus from the Eastman School) currently accepting students for the following subjects (online sessions):
-Music theory (basic to college level), including harmony, counterpoint, analysis
-Western music history (medieval to contemporary), music appreciation
-Composition, instrumentation/orchestration, music notation (software + score preparation), electronic music, university application portfolio feedback and general application advising
-English (for academic writing)
My artistic work has received grants including the Berlin Fellowship from the Academy of Arts, Berlin; commission support from the Canada Council of the Arts; eight awards from the SOCAN Foundation Young Composer Awards; a graduate study stipend from the DAAD; a full scholarship from the Eastman School of Music; and four departmental awards from the Eastman composition department.
I've published on music theory and adjacent topics, including through Perspectives of New Music (vol. 60 no. 2) and SWR Jetztmusik.
I've also been involved in a lot of practical music administration and concert production, especially as one of the artistic directors of AIR contemporary music collective - we're a Beijing-based group putting on new music for Chinese instruments.
Teaching Style
I've taught students of all levels, from those brushing up on theory rudiments to current composition undergrads. I've worked in and/or studied music in four different countries - so I have a broad understanding of different curricula and teaching approaches.
In teaching theory, I try to always ground new ideas in real contexts of historical music-making - this means helping students understand what kind of actual music matches with abstract ideas in music theory. Learning theory means developing an enriched awareness of why people made music the way they did - and understanding theory as a creative frontier. I draw from my practical experiences as a composer.
