About

I’m Hayk Barseghyan, an award-winning photographer and filmmaker based in Armenia, with nearly 20 years of experience capturing nature, cityscapes, and human stories through photography and film. My work has been featured by National Geographic and Al Jazeera, including a documentary on decades of displacement in Gyumri. I’m also a Life Framer laureate, producing over 100 professional time-lapses each year that showcase technical precision and cinematic storytelling.

Teaching Philosophy

Photography is more than just pressing the shutter—it’s about seeing differently, planning effectively, and communicating a story through visuals. My teaching is personalized for every student:

  • Beginners: Learn the basics of photography, composition, lighting, and mobile shooting to start capturing great images right away.

  • Intermediate & Advanced: Master professional camera settings, advanced techniques, time-lapse filmmaking, and post-production workflows.

  • Documentary & Storytelling: Develop skills to create impactful visual narratives, from concept development to filming, sound recording, and editing.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on, practical exercises tailored to your goals.

  • A clear understanding of both technical and artistic aspects of photography.

  • Guidance on storytelling techniques to make your work visually compelling.

  • Professional feedback and personalized assignments to track your progress.

My goal is to help you confidently create images and films that stand out—whether for personal passion or professional projects.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is practical, structured, and highly personalized. I focus on understanding each student’s current skill level and goals, then designing lessons that build both technical mastery and creative confidence.

I believe the best way to learn photography is through real-world practice—so every lesson includes hands-on exercises, professional tips, and constructive feedback. Whether you’re learning to shoot with a phone or mastering advanced time-lapse techniques with professional gear, I guide you step-by-step, ensuring you understand not just how to capture an image, but why certain techniques work.

Students describe my approach as clear, motivating, and inspiring, helping them develop a unique visual voice while gaining the skills needed to create professional-quality photos and films.

Curriculum

I use a step-by-step, project-based approach that combines theory with immediate hands-on practice. Each lesson is designed to:

  • Assess your current skill level and goals.

  • Introduce essential techniques through live demonstrations.

  • Guide you in completing real-world photography or time-lapse projects.

  • Provide detailed feedback and next steps for improvement.

For documentary and filmmaking lessons, we’ll also cover storyboarding, sound recording, and editing, giving you a full understanding of the creative process from concept to final production.

Recommended Student Texts

While lessons include all the explanations and materials you’ll need, I also recommend these books for further learning and inspiration:

  • Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson – great for mastering camera settings and light.

  • The Photographer’s Eye by Michael Freeman – essential for composition and storytelling.

  • Digital Filmmaking for Beginners by Michael Hughes – for students interested in video and documentary techniques.

(Books are optional; we can achieve excellent results through lessons alone.)
