Howard Alper
About
Drummer Howard Alper has long encompassed in his music the myriad experiences and influences of growing up in his native Brooklyn, NYC.
At the age of 16, Howard started to study drum set and quickly began playing in local bands. An appreciation of Rock, Hip-Hop and Funk led to Howard getting his first break when he began playing with NYC Funk/Rock legends D'TRIPP.
After his tenure with D'TRIPP, Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover tabbed Howard to play drums in his solo project. This association led to Howard collaborating with Corey for his release on LaFace records entitled "Hymns." The critically acclaimed Rock & Soul album was an important step in Howard's professional career as a drummer and songwriter.
As a band leader Howard co-founded The Radical Thought Resistance, a Hard Rock meets Drum & Bass/Jungle project. Their CD entitled "Empowered Species" garnered favorable reviews and Howard's drumming was profiled in the June 2003 edition of Modern Drummer magazine.
Howard's versatility as a drummer can be seen in the wide range of music projects with which he has been associated. He has been fortunate to perform in the studio and/or live with the following artists, composers and producers:

Teaching Style
I have been working as a professional drummer for close to twenty five years, both in the studio and for live performance. I consider myself to be an authority on live acoustic and electronic drumming as well as studio performance and drum programming. I can say with confidence that I have a wealth of experience in myriad styles associated with Pop music as well as Electronic Avant-Garde & Experimental drumming applications. I would love to share all the knowledge I have acquired with you! My approach to teaching is to first assess the level of the student and then plan lessons accordingly with the students goal the primary consideration. As a teacher I am not a "task master" but more of a Yoda style instructor with a sense of humor!
Curriculum
For beginners I teach from Stick Control by George Stone for rudiments & Syncopation by Ted Reed for reading. For more advanced students it matters what they primarily want to learn. I am an advocate of rudimental drum set application and also use Rudiment Grooves for Drumset by Rick Considine as a referral text. I also use Youtube links for reference with all students.
