About

Hi! I’m Isaac, a guitarist, bassist, and vocal coach with over 20 years of hands-on playing, performing, and teaching experience. I specialize in fingerstyle guitar, jazz harmony, and creative genre-blending, helping students discover their own sound and play with confidence.

My musical background is rooted in jazz theory and expressive fingerstyle playing, but my influences span a wide range — from indie and psychedelic rock to Latin styles like bossa nova, folk, blues, and experimental fusion. I’ve performed at iconic venues including the House of Blues, The Viper Room, and Whisky a Go-Go, and have released original music on major streaming platforms for over 8 years. Throughout my career, I’ve played in multiple collaborative projects and bands, always exploring new musical territory.

I also bring formal training to my vocal coaching, having studied voice and performed in choir during my early years. This foundation allows me to help students develop technique, range, and expressive control — whether they’re just starting out or looking to refine their sound.

No matter your level or musical goals, I aim to create a personalized, engaging, and empowering lesson experience that meets you where you are — and helps you grow into the player or singer you want to be.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is highly student-centered and adaptable. I believe that every student brings their own personality, goals, and learning style to the instrument — and I tailor lessons accordingly. Whether someone wants to strum chords, dive into fingerstyle, strengthen their voice, or experiment with songwriting, I meet them where they are and build from there.

I aim to create a space where students feel supported, encouraged, and free to explore. My lessons are built on clear communication, steady progress, and plenty of room for creativity. No rigid rules — just structure where it’s helpful, and flexibility where it inspires growth.

Curriculum

I typically use tablature, chord charts, and ear training as my primary tools, especially for beginner and intermediate students. I’ve found that standard notation can feel intimidating for many, so I only bring it in when it genuinely supports the student’s goals. While I’m not a professional sight-reader, I have a working knowledge from years of vocal training and ensemble experience.

My approach includes custom exercises I’ve developed over the years — for fingerstyle technique, jazz voicings, rhythmic development, and vocal strength. For voice students, I cover foundational topics like breath support, pitch control, vocal placement, and range building, always with an ear toward the genres the student loves.

I also like to keep learning accessible. When appropriate, I direct students to free, high-quality online resources like chord chart libraries, tablature databases, or vocal warm-up guides. I want students to feel empowered to explore without needing to buy a stack of books.

For students who enjoy a more structured approach, I may occasionally recommend:

  • Hal Leonard Bass Method (Book 1) by Ed Friedland – for foundational bass technique

  • Progressive Fingerpicking Guitar by Brett Duncan – a strong intro to fingerstyle concepts

  • Set Your Voice Free by Roger Love – for vocal technique and range building

Credentials & Affiliations

I’ve been an active performing and recording musician for over 20 years. I currently release music under the name Low Hush, with my latest single, “Hesitation”, now available on all major streaming platforms. Prior to this, I released several original works under the project name ikexyin, including a Latin/jazz/indie fusion EP that reflects my genre-blending musical roots.

My original music has been available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other major platforms for over 8 years, and I’ve performed at iconic venues including the House of Blues, The Viper Room, and Whisky a Go-Go. I’ve also collaborated with a wide range of artists and bands across California, contributing guitar, bass, vocals, and songwriting.

While I don’t hold a traditional music degree, I’ve studied privately in voice and theory, performed in choirs and ensembles, and taught students both independently and through community-based music education programs. My credentials are grounded in real-world experience, both onstage and in the studio.
