Isaac Newman
About
I am a cellist, composer, and conductor with a degree in Music from Harvard University. Alongside my work as a performer, I have taught cello and piano to students of different ages and levels, from children picking up an instrument for the first time to older students preparing for auditions.
As a performer, I was a two-time winner of the French Woods Festival Concerto Competition, appearing as soloist with their symphony orchestra. At Harvard, I served as Principal Cellist of both the Bach Society Orchestra and the GSAS Symphony Orchestra, and I was also a member of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, with whom I toured to Mexico. In addition, I have performed as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral cellist, and pit orchestra player.
In my lessons, I emphasize strong technical foundations, clear practice strategies, and personal expression. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, my goal is to help you grow step by step while finding genuine enjoyment in making music.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is supportive, structured, and flexible to each student’s needs. I believe clear goals and step-by-step practice create confidence, but I also want lessons to feel inspiring and enjoyable. While I emphasize strong fundamentals — posture, tone, rhythm, and intonation — I adapt lessons to the interests of each student, whether that means preparing for an audition, learning favorite pieces, or simply exploring the joy of playing. Above all, I aim to create an encouraging environment where students feel motivated to grow and express themselves through music.
Curriculum
I adapt my curriculum to match each student’s age, level, and personal goals, creating lessons that are both structured and engaging. For those following a classical path, I often draw from established method books like Suzuki and Dotzauer, as well as etudes and repertoire from composers such as Bach, Haydn, Saint-Saëns, and Schubert. I also enjoy working with students who want to branch out — whether that’s exploring musical theater, popular songs, or contemporary works — to keep lessons exciting and connected to their own interests. My goal is to give students a strong technical foundation while also nurturing their creativity and individual voice.
