Teaching Style

Jackson likes to get students making music right away using the voice and body percussion.

Beginners learn the geography of the piano keyboard, note names and simple chords, swiftly moving to melodies, scales and arpeggios. Students learn to read and write music on the grand stave, how to practice with a metronome and how to have good posture and technique. The study of Solfège is recommended.

Intermediate and advanced classical students are encouraged to work on pieces by J.S. Bach in addition to other composers in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionist styles.

Jackson puts an emphasis on learning accurate rhythm and syncopation as this is the key to making good music. Jackson guides students through Trinity or ABRSM practical, performance and theory grades and breaks down the requirements into easy to learn units.

Jazz piano is taught beginning with the Blues and moving through 'Rhythm Changes' to choice standards of increasing complexity. Students learn how to read chord symbols, create chord voicings for different functions and learn how to improvise over common jazz chord progressions and how to embellish a melody using Jazz language. Preparation for ABRSM Jazz Piano grades is encouraged.

Rock and Pop Piano/Keyboards covers stylistic chord progressions and rhythm patterns plus the use of electric piano, Hammond organ and synthesizer sounds to recreate your favorite songs.
