About

James Gereige is a lifelong learner whose studies bridge Berklee College of Music and SRH Berlin, with academic training and professional experience spanning performance, composition, sound engineering, and music direction. He brings a balance of strong technical skill, musical sensitivity, and real-world experience to his teaching.

He has worked across many musical environments, including orchestras, bands, musical theatre productions, recording studios, and live performance venues. His experience includes serving as a sound engineer for professional studios and live events, participating in scoring sessions, supporting productions under consideration for Grammy awards, and working as an audio engineer on projects such as Mad Jupiter and Sophie Atlas. He has also been involved in musical theatre productions as a pit musician, conductor, and musical director.

Alongside performance and production work, he has a strong leadership background. He has led bands, conducted orchestras, directed middle school musicals, coached younger musicians, and supported students in both classroom and camp settings. Academically, he maintains a GPA of 3.96 and has focused his studies on electronic production, acoustics, and performance.

James continues to expand his musical perspective through ongoing study and curiosity. He is currently learning the Indian tabla, deepening his understanding of rhythm, timing, and non-Western musical traditions. This learning informs his teaching by reinforcing the importance of listening, cultural awareness, and rhythmic fluency, and it reflects his belief that growth as a musician is a continuous and joyful process.

Teaching has always been a meaningful part of his musical journey, and he values helping students grow not only as musicians but as confident and curious learners.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is supportive, structured, and student-centered. I believe students learn best when they feel safe to explore, ask questions, and make mistakes as part of the process. I adapt my approach to each student’s goals, learning pace, and musical interests.

I focus on building strong foundations while keeping lessons engaging and practical. Whether a student is learning an instrument, exploring music production, or developing performance skills, I aim to connect technical work to real musical applications so learning always feels purposeful and motivating.

I encourage independence, creativity, and reflection, helping students understand not just what to play or do, but why it works and how they can apply it in different musical contexts.

Curriculum

My teaching approach combines inquiry-based learning with hands-on experience. Lessons are interactive and practical, allowing students to learn by doing while developing a strong conceptual understanding of music.

Key elements of my method include:

  • Hands-on learning through playing, listening, recording, and experimenting
  • Inquiry-driven discussions that encourage students to think critically and musically
  • Conceptual understanding so that students grasp the ideas behind the technique and theory
  • Cooperative learning, when appropriate, especially in ensemble or collaborative settings
  • Differentiation to meet individual learning needs and goals

Recommended materials depend on the student’s area of focus. These may include:

  • Instrument-specific method books suited to the student’s level
  • Score excerpts and real repertoire from classical, jazz, and contemporary music
  • DAW-based resources and guided projects for production and sound engineering students
  • Listening lists and analysis exercises tailored to the student’s interests

All materials are selected to support clarity, creativity, and long-term musical growth.
