About

My musical journey began under the mentorship of Mads Eriksen, the acclaimed Norwegian guitarist, with whom I studied for three years. His influence shaped both my technical foundation and my approach to the instrument as a vehicle for personal expression. Over the past decade I have built a career as a recording artist, producer, and session guitarist — releasing four solo albums under my own name and collaborating with artists including Lullanas and Ciaran Lavery. I have performed at major festivals across Europe, including Bergenfest, Nürnberg Pop Fest, and Jajaja, and toured the continent both as a solo act and alongside Irish band Villagers. That breadth of real-world experience — from the studio to the festival stage — is something I bring directly into my teaching.

Teaching Style

My core belief is simple: lessons should be fun and inspiring. The songs and techniques we work on will always be chosen with you in mind, because what motivates one player can leave another cold — and motivation is everything. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, from complete beginners to working professionals, and I find the intermediate stage particularly rewarding. It's the point where players start discovering their own voice, and helping that click into place is genuinely exciting to be part of. Whether your goal is to master a specific song, sharpen your technique, or develop as a well-rounded musician, we'll find an approach that's both effective and enjoyable.

Credentials & Affiliations

Norwegian folk singer-songwriter Jarle Skavhellen is heavily influenced by the old-timey guitar stylings of American icons Chet Atkins and Dave Van Ronk despite having lived in Bergen his whole life. Growing up in the small, lush town with a family of artists and musicians, he got his start early when he was taught how to play at age eleven by iconic Norwegian guitarist, Mads Eriksen. His father’s love for vinyl of all genres and his uncle’s ever-expanding guitar collection enabled Jarle’s passion for music to grow. He played in numerous bands over the years from indie-rock to funk to even a Metallica cover band in high school before having the courage to start writing and performing his own songs three years ago. He blends the warm vintage sounds of yesteryear with his own distinctive mumblings over lush acoustic guitars. After topping the Spotify Viral Hits Charts both globally and in the US for his first single The Ghost In Your Smile back in December 2016, Jarle was found and signed to International label Nettwerk Records (Angus & Julia Stone, Boy & Bear, Passenger). Jarle’s debut album The Ghost In Your Smile was released in 2018.
