John Ball
About
I have studied tabla for 30 years with 3 great maestros, namely Pandit Sudhir Saxena (Ajrara), Ustad Faiyaz Khan (Delhi) and Pandit Yogesh Samsi (Punjab)
I have taught tabla and Indian Music Improvisation at the University of Sheffield, UK for the last 15 years at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I have taught tabla for South Asian Arts UK (Saa-UK) in Leeds for more than 10 years and I am their lead tutor in Tabla.
Teaching Style
Students have different objectives when learning tabla and I feel it is important to address these, while at the same time instilling the basic principles of sound technique which contribute towards a strong base for ongoing learning. I draw on a range of different traditions and repertoires when teaching tabla suited to each and every student.
Curriculum
My approach is based primarily on aural learning, with notations as a supporting element. This artform cannot be conveyed through literature or texts as it is an oral tradition.
Credentials & Affiliations
