Hello! My name is John Dorney. I am a Berklee College of Music alumni and educator located in Brooklyn NY.
I have 5+ years of teaching both privately and for after school programs such as The School of Rock (3+ years) and The Williamsburg Music Studio. I also teach online lessons and have been doing so for 2+ years.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is simple. We use the music that you love as a vehicle to approach foundational and advanced musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, bass motion, and harmony.
Curriculum
My method is to get students excited about learning music by creating lesson plans that interest them as well as develop their specific goals.

Performer, Club Groove, New York City, NY - August 27th - Present
At Groove I perform during the 7pm - 8:30pm dinner slot with my trio. We play my original music as well as cover songs that fit nicely into our set.
Guitarist, Bassist, Cat Ridgeway, Orlando FL - March 2023 - Present
Cat Ridgeway is a singer songwriter from Orlando FL who has written songs with artists such as Shaun Mullins and broken into both the top 100 AAA charts and Americana singles charts. She has performed on many notable stages such as 30A songwriters fest, Ockeechobee Music Festival and House of Blues sharing the stage with acts like Arcade Fire, Leon Bridges, Brandi Carlile and many more. I have been playing guitar and bass with Cat since March of 2023 and we have just completed our first tour of the east coast opening for Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards

My original project featuring recorded original music. I have been working on this particular project since June 2023 when I started to demo out some new original material. In September 2023 I went to Ashlawn Recording Company in Lyme CT to record an EP. I employed three artists I work with regularly in Orlando for drums, bass, backing vocals, and also to capture video and edit together the entire experience. We also worked with Charles Dahkile, the producer and owner of Ashlawn Recording Company to make these songs come to life.
Guitarist, Bassist, Rowdey, Orlando FL March 2024 - Present
Rowdey works closely with grammy award winning country artist Cole Swindell as a drum technician. This is a new group consisting of myself, Aaron Buckingham (Roosevelt Coolier, Steelin’ Peaches), JJ (sound engineer Under Oath), and Rowdey (drum technician Cole Swindell). We play original music created by JJ and Rowdey and have been making demos in Aaron’s recording studio in Plant City FL. We are opening for the band Under Oath at Janus Live on December 15th.

At the School of Rock I taught multiple instruments both privately and in group settings. School of Rock is a unique music school in the sense that in addition to private lessons students are also able to join different levels of the performance programs offered. I worked with special needs students both in private instruction and groups settings as well. These classes start at the rookies program (ages 3-6) and ascend through Rock 101 (ages 6-12) Show Seasons (ages 12-18). There are also two audition based programs the house band which is for the same age bracket as show seasons and auditions students for the opportunity to play more shows within their community. The other audition based program is the Allstars which is by region. The selected students in this bracket are the same ages as performance and house band but go on a national tour.
