About

Justin Douté is a drum, classical percussion, hand drumming, and basic piano instructor.

He attended the Denver School of the Arts for Music and the Manhattan School of Music. While an undergraduate, he overcame three leukemia diagnoses and later completed his Bachelor’s in Music Performance at the University of North Florida. His awards include winning the Aspen School of Music Solo Percussion Competition, the Denver Philharmonic’s Concerto Competition, and the Manhattan School of Music’s Concerto Competition. Most recently, he claimed the Gold Medal and Grand Prize at the Young Texas Artist Music Competition. He was also the second-place winner of the Blackswamp Percussion Solo Percussion Competition, the winner of the Denver Concert Band’s Concerto Competition, and a finalist in the PRISMA Concerto Competition and the Denver Young Artists Orchestra Concerto Competition. Additionally, he has published music through Bachovich Music.

Justin has experienced great success in teaching, sending many students to music conservatories with full scholarships. He has taught students ranging in age from 5 to 50 and has held a drumline teaching position as well as a classical percussion position at Granview High School for the past 3 years.

His scholarships include assistance from the Manhattan School of Music, the Cancer Scholarship Program, the Student Government Scholarship to the University of North Florida, and a full scholarship to Rice University’s Master's in Music Program.

He currently holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Florida and a Master's degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, both in Percussion Performance. During the summer of 2018, Justin was awarded the Charlie Owen Scholarship and performed as a full-time timpanist at the Aspen School of Music and Festival. From 2021 to 2023, he earned a Performance Certificate and an Artist Diploma from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

Justin currently performs with the Signature Symphony at TCC as Principal Percussionist, with the Boise Philharmonic as Section Percussionist, and as a substitute with several local orchestras. Alongside pianist Yukino Miyake, he commissions and performs new music for piano and percussion in a duo titled “JUKINO.”

Teaching Style

I have many different tracked courses that I offer to fit each student. Skills such as auditioning, practicing and strategies to improve at all instruments and techniques will be discussed and assessed. 

Syllabus Tracks: classical percussion, specific hand percussion, drum set development and basic piano. 

Theory is a natural side of music that is taught through music while the lesson information evolves.
