About

I offer coaching in voice, piano and guitar for singers, and songwriting. I work from a holistic methodology, incorporating elements of theoretical knowledge, ear training, performance technique, body awareness, mindfulness, creativity, and improvisation into my coaching sessions. I specialize in guiding students along a growth path that honors their unique learning style and artistic vision, utilizing versatile teaching approach that sets the stage for long-term creative growth.

I have 15+ years experience teaching in academic, community, and private settings. My professional training includes studying music performance and creation at Furman University and Hampshire College, as well as coaching from Broadway composer Craig Carnelia and Billboard Top 10 songwriters Stephen Bray and Lari White. With a classical, theatrical, and contemporary musical background, I explore a diverse array of musical interests and genres with my students.

Working from a background as a multi-instrumentalist professional touring songwriter, I offer a unique one-stop shop for creative development — integrating music lessons, songwriting, performance coaching, and creative career mentorship into a cohesive, personalized experience.

Students can explore:

  • Piano, guitar, and Celtic harp for singers

  • Songwriting and composition

  • Performance skills and stage presence

  • Audition and recording preparation

  • Creative identity and career direction

My approach blends technical skill-building with emotional expression, mindfulness, and deep listening, drawing from both traditional training and sound-based meditation practices. Lessons are tailored to the whole person — supporting not just what a student can do, but what they want to say and become as an artist.

Whether working with beginners, hobbyists, or emerging professionals, I create a supportive environment where creativity, confidence, and authenticity can thrive.

PERFORMER BIO:

Kala Farnham crafts contemporary folk songs with roots and wings, weaving age-old truths into modern grooves. The 18th Connecticut State Troubadour and award-winning artist has earned national recognition as a 2020 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist, 2019 Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Contest winner, two-time Great American Song Contest finalist, and an Official Showcase Artist at both the Northeastern and Southeastern Regional Folk Alliance Conferences, among other accolades. She has shared the stage with legends such as Don McLean and Tower of Power, folk troubadours such as Lucy Kaplansky and David Wilcox, and more.

Drawing on a background in classical piano, musical theater, and therapeutic sound, she offers a signature reinvention of the folk tradition— infusing fairytales, historical fiction, and narrative medicine into vivid portraits of the human experience. Her intimate, interactive performances—featuring soul-stirring vocals and mystical folk harp, piano, and guitar—invite listeners on a transcendent journey that lingers long after the final note fades.

In addition to her solo career, Kala is the founder of KalaChakra Holistic Sound & Music, where she curates concert events, mentors emerging artists, and collaborates with fellow artists as a session player in the studio and on stage. She is a teaching artist and holistic arts facilitator, offering workshops that integrate music, mindfulness, and creative expression.

Teaching Style

With 15+ years experience as a vocal coach, I am devoted to helping others experience enhanced well-being through the transformative power of the musical arts. I will guide you through healthy vocal technique, support you in building your confidence, and offer empowering tools to conquer stage fright and tap into the joy of self-expression through song.

As a professional performing songwriter who understands the multi-faceted layers of performance art, I don't require my students to choose a single musical path. Drawing from my own experience as a recording and touring artist, I work with my students to become well-rounded musicians as they work toward their creative vision as performing songwriters, singing guitarists, working musicians, and recording artists. Our sessions may include discussions about the music business, concert booking strategy, artist resources, and support through career decisions, music releases, and more.
