About

Kari Tauring is a culture bearer of Nordic heritage. Growing up in Minnesota with summers on the Wisconsin farm, nature and nature instruments are a constant in her life. An expert in Old Norse poetry and runes, a study she began in 1988, Kari weaves ancient poetic meaning into the sounds of sheep and swan bones, elder and willow trees, and a variety of horns.

Kari studied Iron Age bone and tree flutes with master musicians in Denmark and Norway in 2023 as part of an apprenticeship program. She is the author of four books (two on runes) and has released four music/storytelling recordings. Kari plays and for and teaches Scandinavian dancing in Minnesota. She makes frequent trips to Norway, performing and learning from friends and relatives there. She taught and played at John C. Campbell in October 2025, sharing all of her gifts with joy!
