Kunie Joma
About
I am a player of the Japanese transverse bamboo flute, known as the "Shinobue," which is made from arrow bamboo (small bamboo that naturally grows across Japan). I have been playing the Shinobue for about 40 years, starting at the age of 10 when I was living in the countryside and learned to play local festival music. I have always been fascinated by its naturally healing sound and enjoy the variety of tones produced by different types of Shinobue in various kinds of music, ranging from traditional Japanese festival music to global Jazz and pop.
I graduated from Tokyo Woman's Christian University in Japan, where I majored in Modern Indian History. Although my bachelor's degree is in history rather than music, after graduation, I joined a British financial company and spent 2 years in London as a new graduate trainee. During my time in London, I became more aware of my identity and the uniqueness of Japanese culture. After returning to Japan, I sought to deepen my understanding of the Shinobue and the culture surrounding it by studying under Fukuhara-ryu, a renowned Shinobue school.
Recently, I have performed accompaniment music for Awa Odori dancing (Tokushima prefecture's traditional dance) at a local cuisine restaurant in Tokyo, and also played "Oayashi" (traditional Japanese rhythmic music made with drums and Shinobue) at the Sannou Festival. Additionally, I teach the Shinobue to beginners both in person and online. In Japan, I offer online lesson classes through the Sutoaka lesson site.
Playing the Shinobue is my lifelong passion. I have decided to open my classes to the world to spread the joy of this simple instrument, which provides pleasant, healing sounds.
Lessons are available in both English and Japanese. People who want to learn not only the Shinobue but also the Japanese language are welcome!
