About

Hello everyone! I’m Kwan, a dedicated piano teacher fueled by a passion for sharing the joy of music. With over eleven years of experience since 2014, I specialize in both classical and popular music, and I adapt my teaching methods to suit each student’s unique learning style, ensuring that music remains both engaging and fulfilling.

I believe that learning the piano should be an enjoyable and enriching journey. My approach focuses on creating a healthy and positive musical experience—helping students build confidence while having fun with music. Whether guiding recreational learners or preparing students for competitions and esteemed placement exams like Trinity College and ABRSM, my goal is to nurture not only skilled musicians but also expressive and resilient performers.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is centered around creating a personalized and engaging learning experience for each student. I believe that every student has their own unique learning pace and style, and my goal is to adapt my methods to match that. I combine a solid foundation in music theory with practical skills, focusing on developing both technical proficiency and musical expression.

I emphasize a balance between structured practice and creative exploration, so students can enjoy the process while also working towards their goals. Whether you’re learning for fun or preparing for exams and competitions, I strive to make each lesson enjoyable, rewarding, and meaningful.

Through patient encouragement, I aim to build a positive learning environment where students feel supported, confident, and motivated to grow as musicians.

Curriculum

My teaching method combines a structured approach with creative exploration. I focus on building a solid foundation in both technique and musicality, ensuring that students not only develop technical proficiency but also enjoy expressing themselves through music. Lessons are designed to suit each student’s individual pace, and I use a variety of methods to keep lessons engaging and fun, whether you’re learning for pleasure or preparing for exams.

Recommended Student Texts
For beginners and intermediate students, I recommend the Piano Adventures series, which offers a comprehensive approach to learning piano with fun and engaging pieces. For developing basic technical skills, Dozen a Day is an excellent resource that provides exercises to improve finger strength and coordination. For students preparing for exams, I suggest using Piano Star from ABRSM, which provides a range of pieces specifically designed to help students prepare for ABRSM piano exams, alongside helpful theory exercises.

Recommended Music Theory Book
For students looking to strengthen their music theory knowledge, I recommend Poco Studio's Music Theory books. These books offer a clear and concise approach to understanding the foundations of music theory, making them suitable for beginners and intermediate learners. The lessons are structured to guide students step-by-step, starting from the basics and gradually advancing to more complex concepts. Poco Studio’s books are great for supplementing piano lessons, helping students not only play but also understand the music they perform.
