About

Hello, my name is Laura and I’m an experienced English tutor. I’ve earned a 100% positive rating tutoring over 300 students on another lesson platform.

I hold a postgraduate degree from the University of Oxford (MPhil in European Politics & Society). My bachelor's degree is in French and German (double major, first class honors) and I've enjoyed using my language skills during my career. I'm also currently learning Spanish.

I'm certified to teach English as a Foreign Language and I hold advanced certificates in teaching Business English and Exam Preparation. I also have a certificate in proofreading and copy-editing.

I’m currently semi-retired and have returned to my original love of languages. I enjoy helping people to express themselves well and seeing their confidence grow.

I live in the north of England, where I relocated after 25 years of living in London. I'm a native speaker of British English with an excellent knowledge of American English. (I’ve visited 21 states in the USA - one of my bucket list items is to visit them all.)

My professional background:
I have 25 years of experience working with multinational companies, SMEs and governments at European Union, national and city levels.
My work has always involved writing detailed reports and briefings with 100% accuracy. I also have significant experience of giving presentations and interviewing job candidates.

My previous roles include:
•    London city government - developing policy to support growth of science and technology companies. Managing £1m+ business support programmes.
•    Policy development and government relations for a life sciences trade association representing SMEs and multinational companies.
•    Freelance policy professional - researching and writing policy reports for a range of clients, including multinational companies in the field of science and innovation, and a large cancer charity.
•    Earlier in my career, I worked in the UK Parliament and in government relations for national trade associations in the university and merchant shipping sectors.

Teaching Style

I'm a friendly and patient tutor with a focus on business English. My classes are relaxed and I will give you as much feedback as you feel comfortable with. My feedback is always kind, helpful and constructive.

I can help you if you would like to:

  • Stretch your skills in speaking and writing English
  • Build your confidence when speaking and writing English
  • Practice your presentations with me
  • Have someone check your written reports, presentations and other documents

I work best with learners who:
•    Already have a good level of spoken English (CEFR B1 and above).
•    Are professionals or students in the following fields:
o    the Life Sciences sector: biopharmaceuticals, medical technology, genomics, diagnostics and digital health
o    Public Policy: the research, development and implementation of policies relating to business and innovation
•    Proactively seek to improve their language skills outside of classes

My classes are probably not suitable for you if you are:
•    Under the age of 18
•    Just beginning your English learning journey

Curriculum

My lessons are highly personalized and can be tailored to your requirements but can include, for example:

  • Discussions about topics or news articles that are relevant to you and your work
  • Practicing work presentations
  • Job interview practice
  • Role plays for work situations
  • Speaking and reading practice for English tests
