Lola Fayemi
About
Hello!
My name is Lola. I have a Bachelor's in Music Technology and Vocal Performance from Georgia State University and a Master's in Music Industry from USC.
I teach beginner to advanced voice and flute, and beginner to intermediate piano and guitar. I had always been interested in music as kid, and it just made sense to pursue a music career. I began singing in my church choir at 7, playing flute at age 11, guitar at 13, and piano at 17. Every few years I was just inspired by another instrument apparently. I pursued a voice degree in college, played in countless marching and community bands, and played guitar and piano for various churches. In addition, I have taught these four instruments for 3 years, beginning in 2019, both in person and online during COVID-19.
And now, I live in Los Angeles, and work in music publishing! I want my students to know that music in a fantastic creative outlet and can bring us closer to the artists and music that we love! And for parents, music sometimes seems a waste of time. Your kid could be doing sports or learning to code, right? But music education can be stimulating both physically and mentally, and fostering creativity is one of the most important outlets for a developing mind. I do not teach kids to become career musicians, I teach them to express themselves and stay diligent so that those skills can be passed down to whatever they choose to pursue in the future.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is based a strong foundation and a want to improve.
I focus first on fundamental technique and basic music theory (based on the instrument). But that stuff can be SUPER boring, so I like to mix things up with games and activities that reinforce a child's knowledge in a fun way.
However, I like to learn about my students and figure out what music they like. Outside of band class and choir practice, what music would they like to learn? From there, I put together arrangements based on their skill level that lets them sing or play what they like. I do this because a big draw to music is what we've heard on the radio or in a movie; this helps build a connection to what the student is playing while implementing those fundamentals. It also gives me an opportunity to teach in context. Mozart is great, but how about Harry Potter, Taylor Swift, or Decedents?
In addition, I take parental suggestions in account as well! Will you all be having a family gathering around the holidays? I often arrange Christmas, Ramadan, and Hanukkah tunes for the kids to show off to the extended family! Does the family love comic book movies? Let's learn the Avengers' theme! Any excuse to play is an excuse to learn in my book!
Curriculum
PLEASE NOTE: If there are any previous titles or series students have experience with, I encourage parents to share and bring them along to lessons. Let's work with what you've got! Additionally, often arrange my own versions of songs for the students to work with, so I will email PDF's as needed.
