About

I have been a working professional pianist and instructor for 40+ years. After graduating from DU Magna Cum Laude with my degree in Piano Performance I began working professionally in the Denver area. I performed as soloist with the Denver Symphony (now the Colorado Symphony), worked as primary coach/accompanist with Opera Colorado for more than 25 years, and have worked with a large variety of Colorado and international musicians and performing groups, and have performed twice at Carnegie Hall.  I continue to perform regularly as a collaborative pianist for area orchestras, musical theater productions, studio recitals for both singers and instrumentalists, community and professional choruses, and a variety of competitions or auditions. As a teacher, I have worked with all levels and ages. My current students range from age 5 to 75! Many start as beginners, but I also enjoy working with those who are returning to the piano after many years, or who wish to continue in advanced repertoire after their school years.

Teaching Style

I really enjoy customizing every session to the unique talents and tastes of the individual student. At every stage of the process, I emphasize learning effective practice techniques to ensure the student sees the progress they need. In lessons I use a variety of method materials depending on the age and inclination of the student, and after some basics are established, we can add supplemental music according to the student's taste, e.g. pop songs, familiar classical themes, musical theater favorites, etc.  For those who want to build even more independence at the keyboard we will develop the theory knowledge that will support playing by ear, improvisation and memorization.  My primary goal is helping the student find out what type of playing is most satisfying for them, and leading them through the steps to make that possible. Music should be fun - and so should music lessons!

Curriculum

Method materials will be chosen based on the student's background, but I'm also open to using materials they already have on hand (from siblings or family members, or past study) and supplementing that as needed.

For beginners,  i have had success with many popular methods such as:

Alfred Basic All-in-One Adult Course, Alfred's Basic Piano Course, Faber Piano Adventures, Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures, David Carr Glover Piano, Piano Safari, Piano Pronto, Carol Matz Piano Series, etc.

For those who are not starting from scratch, materials will depend entirely on each student's experience and repertoire needs.
