About

Hello! My name is Maria Lucia Roca. I’m a classically trained pianist and passionate educator with over 10 years of teaching experience across three continents. I hold a Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy, a Master’s in Piano Performance from Madrid, and a Bachelor's degree in Piano from a U.S. university.

My approach is rooted in clarity, structure, and adaptability. I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals, whether they want to explore classical repertoire, dive into popular music, or simply build a solid foundation in piano technique and theory.

I focus on:

  • Technique: posture, hand position, articulation, scales, and finger strength.

  • Musical interpretation: dynamics, phrasing, stylistic accuracy, and emotional expression.

  • Sight-reading and theory: essential tools for independent learning and musical understanding.

  • Creative growth: encouraging improvisation, composition, or personal expression if the student is interested.

My lessons are student-centered and progress at a pace that ensures both comfort and motivation. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced student, a child or an adult, I will support your musical journey with patience, passion, and professionalism.

I speak English, French, and Spanish fluently, and I’m happy to teach in any of those languages. I’ve taught students from all over the world, both in-person and online, and I believe music is a universal language that brings people together.

Let’s make music meaningful—and enjoyable—together!

Curriculum

My teaching method is flexible and student-centered, always adapted to each student’s age, learning style, and musical goals. I aim to build a strong technical foundation while encouraging musical expression, confidence, and enjoyment.

For beginners—especially children—I use engaging and structured materials such as:

  • Hal Leonard Piano Lessons

  • Faber Piano Adventures

  • ABRSM Piano Books (Prep Test and Grades 1–8)

I have successfully prepared over 20 students for ABRSM exams, all of whom passed with Merit or Distinction. These exams offer an excellent framework for technical, theoretical, and expressive development, and I integrate them into the curriculum when appropriate.

For more advanced students or those focusing on interpretation and artistry, I tailor lessons with a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire, including:

  • Works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and others

  • Lead sheetschord charts, and ear training for students interested in popular music or improvisation

I also integrate music theory, sight-reading, and aural skills seamlessly into each lesson, helping students become well-rounded and independent musicians.
