Maria Monserrat Camargo
About
I am a native Spanish speaker, born and raised in the border cities of the U.S. and Mexico, and fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with a specialization in Singing from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ), Mexico, completed in 2017, and a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology and Digital Competencies from the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (UNIR), Spain, completed in 2021. While pursuing this Master’s degree, I simultaneously completed diplomas in Educational Neurotechnology and Innovation, Digital Resources for the Classroom, and the Fundamentals of Digital Educational Communities, also from UNIR. I am currently pursuing a second Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting and Pedagogy at UNIR, further expanding my expertise in music education, digital innovation, and leadership.
My work is primarily dedicated to church singing, with a strong focus on Catholic liturgical music—both teaching and performing.
Since 2014, I have worked as a music instructor, both privately and through various digital platforms. Since 2017, I have served as a faculty member at the Diocesan School of Liturgical Music, part of the Catholic Diocese of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, where I teach courses such as Choral Conducting, Choral Ensembles, Digital Media Applied to Music, and Music Theory and Solfège.
My performance experience includes major works such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Requiem, and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, as well as operas like Tosca, Pagliacci, Cavalleria Rusticana, Don Pasquale, and Don Giovanni. I have performed in operatic galas with the UACJ Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestros Carlos García Ruiz, Armando Pesqueira, Guillermo Quezada, and Valentin Nedelchev Tushev, as a member of the Bachelor of Music Choir at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) from 2011 to 2017, directed by Maestro Alonso Fierro and later Maestro Jorge Vargas Cuamba. I also collaborated with the El Paso Chorale and the El Paso Chamber Choir, led by Maestro Prentice Loftin, performing across venues in El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico from 2009 to 2011. My ensemble experience includes participation in the UACJ Experimental Popular Music Ensemble and DeClase Ensemble, both directed by Maestro Danni Iglesias Díaz from 2015 to 2017. I remain committed to continuous growth, regularly attending conferences, master classes, and professional development courses in both musical and religious fields. In 2024, I had the honor of participating in the IV International Choir Meeting at the Vatican, presided over by Monsignor Marco Frisina.
For me, teaching is more than a profession; it is a calling. I am devoted to sharing knowledge, guiding others in their musical and educational journeys, and fostering a deeper appreciation for music in general.
Teaching Style
I teach exclusively online, as I believe technology is a powerful tool for learning music when used effectively. Students receive manuals, infographics, exercises, written progress diagnostics, recordings, and study resources tailored to their needs. My approach focuses on vocal technique, guiding students to sing in the style of their choice while practicing songs they enjoy. Each piece is adapted to the student’s vocal range and individual needs, ensuring both technical growth and artistic expression.
Curriculum
For beginner students in music theory and singing, an effective teaching approach blends interactive methods—such as solfège hand signs, rhythm clapping, and digital tools like Soundcorset or MuseScore—with structured group activities and visual aids. Recommended texts include Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory and Music Theory: From Absolute Beginner to Expert for foundational concepts, while Singing for the Stars and The Singing Book offer progressive vocal exercises and performance guidance. These resources support both private instruction and digital learning environments, helping students build confidence, pitch accuracy, and theoretical fluency from the ground up.
