For Beginners: The Fun Starts Now
Our initial focus is on getting you making music right away. We will:

Play your first full songs using the essential chords that unlock thousands of hits.
-
Master core techniques like picking and strumming so you can play with confidence.
-
Build a simple and effective 10-minute daily routine to see real, consistent progress.
-
Learn the right way from the start to avoid frustration and build good habits for life.
For Intermediate Players: Break Through Your Plateaus
Feeling stuck? This is my specialty. We can work together to:
-
Truly Unlock the Fretboard: Go beyond memorized shapes and understand how to navigate the entire neck with confidence and creativity.
-
Master the Art of Improvisation: Learn to create compelling solos from scratch. We’ll dive deep into the theory and technique to help you express your own musical ideas.

Move Beyond the CAGED System: Learn to use CAGED as a tool, not a trap. We'll explore more fluid, melodic ways to see and play the guitar.
-
Refine Your Technique: We’ll work on everything from fingerpicking and hybrid picking to advanced techniques, helping you play cleaner, faster, and more accurately.

Teaching Style
My teaching philosophy is built on blending two essential elements: a proven, structured curriculum and a completely personalized delivery tailored to the individual. I believe that providing a clear path forward is just as important as adapting to the person walking it.
My approach begins with a core framework that covers all the essential skills, theory, and techniques, much like the trusted methods from Hal Leonard. This structure ensures every student builds a rock-solid foundation without any gaps, providing a reliable roadmap for progress from your first lesson onwards. It's the "what" we learn, refined over years of experience.
However, the "how" we learn is where the real magic happens. My most important job is to recognize how you learn best. I see our structured curriculum as a guide, not a script. I adapt the delivery of every concept to fit your unique learning style—whether you're a visual learner who thrives on diagrams, someone who builds skill through repetition and muscle memory, or an analytical thinker who needs to understand the "why" behind the theory before it clicks. This hybrid approach ensures you get the best of both worlds: the reliability of a proven system and the personal attention of a mentor who understands exactly how to help you succeed.
Finally, I believe practice should always feel like playing, not like work. To that end, I integrate modern tools from day one. We’ll use everything from the essential metronome to a wide variety of apps and websites that provide backing tracks. This approach transforms simple exercises into engaging musical conversations, which simultaneously trains your ear, develops an unshakable sense of rhythm, and makes your daily practice something you’ll actually look forward to.
Curriculum
My curriculum is built on a foundation of trusted, industry-standard methods, refined by decades of professional teaching experience. But the path of learning never ends, and I am constantly evolving my approach, incorporating new ideas and techniques that benefit my students.
While many of our lessons will feature custom exercises and sheet music I create for you, these are some of the excellent resources we may use to guide our journey:
Core Method Books
-
Hal Leonard Guitar Method: A fantastic, graded system that uses fun, recognizable riffs to teach you core concepts—perfect for showing off your new skills to friends.
-
The Guitar Handbook (Ralph Denyer): A must-have "encyclopedia" for any guitarist. It covers everything from theory to gear maintenance, and it's a book you'll return to throughout your entire musical life—I still use my copy to this day!
-
A Modern Method for Guitar (William Leavitt): A more traditional, rigorous option from Berklee Press, excellent for students who are serious about learning to read music from day one.
For Deeper Study (Theory & Fretboard)
-
Music Theory for Guitarists (Tom Kolb): Presents essential theory in a practical, guitar-centric way that you can apply immediately.
-
Guitar Fretboard Workbook (Barrett Tagliarino): An outstanding resource for truly mastering the neck and breaking out of the confines of pattern-based playing.
Modern & Digital Tools
Beyond physical books, we'll use a wealth of digital tools to make learning more effective and fun.
-
Guitar Pro: This is what I use to create crystal-clear, custom exercises and song arrangements tailored specifically for you.
-
Ultimate Guitar: A vast library for finding chords and tabs for nearly any song you want to learn.
-
Spark App (and similar tools): To instantly access backing tracks and analyze your favorite songs in real-time.
