Marla Homan
About
Hi, I’m Marla, a classically trained pianist with over 15 years of teaching experience and a lifelong connection to music. I completed my practical studies through the Royal Conservatory of Music, along with all theory requirements, including harmony and music history.
Throughout my own years of piano study, I performed in numerous recitals, festivals, and competitions as both a soloist and duet partner. These experiences gave me a strong foundation in performance and musical understanding, which I now bring into my teaching.
I believe in creating a positive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable to explore, grow, and express themselves. My goal is to meet each student where they’re at and guide them toward their personal goals with patience, structure, and genuine support.
Whether you're brand new to piano or returning after time away, I’m committed to helping you build strong musical skills while keeping lessons engaging, supportive, and meaningful. I consider it a privilege to be part of each student’s musical journey.
Teaching Style
I believe that piano lessons should be engaging, empowering, and adaptable to the online space. My teaching philosophy blends traditional foundations with modern tools — balancing solid technique and music theory with creative exploration and digital interactivity. I value connection over perfection and emphasize musical understanding, not just rote learning. I also believe in teaching the whole musician: someone who can read music, play with expression, understand patterns, and think independently.
Curriculum
My teaching method is a blend of structured progression and playful engagement, specifically designed for today’s online learners. I primarily use the Carol Matz Interactive Piano Method, which pairs traditional pedagogy with digital resources to keep students motivated and involved. I teach foundational skills such as note reading, rhythm, technique, and ear training, while also incorporating games, improvisation, and creative projects. Lessons are student-centered, developmentally appropriate, and paced to match each child's readiness. I regularly communicate with parents and use technology to support consistent progress between lessons. Whether it's a private lesson or small group class, my goal is always to make music learning meaningful, fun, and something students look forward to each week.
